Weird jolting and lunging at high rpms? Transmission failure?

Hi there! I just picked up my second ranger, a 2002 3.0l edge automatic but unfortunately I’ve noticed that my transmission acts funky when shifting occasionally. It will lunge and rev over and over almost like a rev limiter but it will eventually shift and drive as normal. If I had to guess I’d say it’s shifting from 3rd to 4th gear back and forth until it can eventually land 4th. This usually only happens when the truck tries to shift at 3-4k rpm, and when I’m getting up to highway speeds (in between 50 and 60) it’s much more likely to happen. I just bought the truck yesterday and am facing buyers regret BIGTIME, so any help at all if anyone knows what it could be would be super helpful. Thank you!!
