what transmission is this?
From the factory, a 96 4.0 would have had a 4R55E. The 5-speed 5R55E came out on the 97 4.0. The 4R44E and 5R44E were the lighter duty version of the series, used only behind 3.0's and 4 cylinders.
i know that the 55 and the 44 means 550 and 440 foot pounds of torque. or am i wrong? would this trans work if it was bolted up to a 3.0? to make it work i would have to change out the torque converter.
Yes, that is Ford shorthand for the input torque rating.
At the very least, you would change the torque converter and bell housing to bolt a 4R55E to a 3.0L. I don't know what other internals would be different to up the torque capacity rating by 25% over the 4R44E. The PCM is calibrated solely for the factory-spec'd trans, so there could be shifting differences when mixing and matching hard parts.
