What would cause my Auto Trans to lose overdrive??

Hi everybody, My 91 Ford Ranger XLT hasn't had overdrive since I acquired it this past January. Its a 2.3L 4Cyl with a 4 speed automatic. I am stumped on this one, just hoping its not internally shot! I did fix a big vacuum leak going to the modulator on the side of the tranny but other than that its got me lost! It does have a rough shift into reverse or drive but other than that it runs fine(minus OD) I need better than 18mpg!! Help!

What could/would cause me to lose 4th gear?

Thanks, Chris

Is fourth gear the torque converter lock up? If so then I am guessing the torque converter many need replaced.
