Ok so there is a guy trying to sell me his limited slip 8.8 out of his 02 4x4 ranger and i have a 1999 2wd i was wondering about the width of the axle is it the same as my 7.5? If so then im buying it he is selling it to me for 50 bucks haha so either way its a steal.

 

It will bolt right in. I did the same swap this past summer.

Nope no width difference. The only axle you would be swapping in that would give you a width difference would be an Explorer axle.

 

its not a fx4 is it?, cause then there is a chance it wont fit

 

^^ the only reason an fx4 axle wont fit is because the axle has bigger tubs so you would need new ubolts. you should buy new ubolts anyway

 

i was under the impression that exploder axles where the same width as well?? how much wider are they?? correct me if im wrong, still kinda wet behind the ears.

 

3/4" per side, 1.5" total I do beleive.

 

But that 3/4" on each side doesn't really stand out.

 

^^^ you are correct but its not a direct bolt in unless you want to lower your truck. I did the explorer swap for around 150 including the price of the axle. its take about 6-8 hours to set everything up. I love mine esp the disc brakes

Who said it was a direct bolt-in? And why would it lower your truck?

 

An explorer axle would lower your truck if you bolted it straight in because its spring-under in stock form. Rangers are spring-over.

 

But I mean how hard is it to just bolt it up spring-over? All you would have to do is change the leaf perches right?

 

Yes, but its not bolt in since it requires welding.

 

True, but it's still not a difficult swap if you have the welding taken care of before hand.

 

^^^ right its not a hard swap at all you need to weld on new spring perches on the top at the correct pinion angle. also you need to weld on the new shock tabs.

 

that would mean my tires would be equally spaced, as the front stick out more by a bit. and i was under the impression that it was a more direct swap. didnt know welding was involved. ****ty buzz. guess i have to go make friends with someone that has a welder, or buy one

 

^^ only the explorer axle requires welding not a ranger axle

 

figured the ranger would be a straight swap, just thought the explorer axle would require the perches flipped... kewl, learning a few details, thanks guys.
