Remove the backing plate behind it on the tailgate.

Thanks for all the good tips, especially to jtslmn720 for the link. Had mine break on my '02 Ranger back in January, but couldn't fix it till I got my arm out a cast. The directions were easy to follow, even for someone of my limited mechanical skills.

I searched online ,and found several after market handles ranging from $18 to $30. Called the local dealer, and got a new OEM for $26.84 plus tax. If anyone is interested, the part number is 1L5Z-9943400-AAA.

Thanks for the help, guys!

next time it breaks, get a metal one to replace it.

imo the metal ones look like crap.

just don't yank on the handle and you should be fine, how often does someones door handle break off?

In my example I have 4 rangers that are driven by employees doing work that requires the tailgate going up and down constantly. I've never broke a metal one after replacing the broke plastic handle.

Different uses for the trucks requires different solutions.

Yep, exactly.. there are two choices to any fix on a problem: Fix it OEM, or fix it right.

Do it metal, and you'll never need to buy another handle again.

Where do you get a metal tailgate handle? Should be paintable right? And I'm not talkin about the old mid 90's handle, I want the new wide one...

those won't be wide like the current model. I don't think they exist in metal, only plastic.

all I have seen in the aftermarket are chrome overlays for the doors.
