Converting 01 taillamps to 98 taillamps

Can someone point me to a how-to? I would like to look into this and the search didn't reveal this information.

I guess I would need to know how to seperate the brake and turn signal voltages.

Thanks,
Zach

Check at the back end of the driver side frame rail. If the connector there has 8 wires on the front side, you have everything you need to wire separate brake and turn signals. In so, then you could probably do a plug and play install using a Mazda taillight subharness.

If not, you might be able to bring the blinker wiring back from the front turn signals and the brake light from the CHMSL or the trailer tow harness. You'd need to look at the amp draw versus the fuse size and wire gauge to see if it would be practical.

Bob,

I have 8 wires on the front side. Can you please be a little more specific on what mazda taillight subharness I would need? I assume I need one from a 98 B-series?

Thanks,
Zach

To be sure that it would plug into your main rear frame harness, I would look into getting a rear subharness for a 2001 Mazda. The B-series were built on the same assembly line with Rangers but had amber turn signals like you want. Since I haven't done the swap, I can't guarnatee that the Mazda subharness connector ends will plug right into your 98 tails but I think chances are good that that they will.

Another approach could be to build your own harness. Less expensive but more work.

Wouldnt the rear harness from a 98 or a 99 Ranger work as well? I havnt changed them but I know they have the same location on the rear frame rail. If you had 8 wires you could go a local u pull it place and get the harness and even cut the other end of the plug off so you have both ends and make it work the way you want to.
