Just got a cap, but it needs rear glass

So, I'm on craigslist and I find an amazing deal on a cap for my truck. Its the wrong color but that's ok. The guy was asking $75 obo. Its blue and its made for a ranger has sliding windows and screens on it. I got it for $60!!!! I was soo happy. I picked up a desk since I've been in cali and wanted to take it back with me. Anyway, It just needs the rear window replaced. Also the guy I bought it from didn't have the keys to lock it. So I need to find a place that replaces the glass (it was shattered and is totally gone). I also need to replace the locks. Any one know where I could take it that would be a good deal? I called one of the local places and it was going to be $395 and up just for the glass. Problem is, I'm not sure of the manufacturer of the top either. The lifts for the rear window are the only thing that has a brand name and they are DURACAP brand.

Any help on this would b most appreciated. Ill post pics later tonight wen I'm outa work.

Now I need to figure out what I'm going to do with my hard tannue cover, if I want to sell it or bring it back to illinois when I go back home in may.

Thanks for all the help!

I will def. Have to check that out! Wats the belifit of plexi glass over tempered auto glass?

Would home depot do that as well? How about locks? they are kind of unique?

About how much would that plexiglass cost?

That's why he sold it for cheap. Is it a flat framed window that you could just cut glass to fit, or a frameless window or what?

Here are some pics of it to give everyone an idea. Sorry I didnt post these sooner.

I went to lowes and all that they can cut of plexi glass is a scare or retangle peice with 90 degree corners. They are not able to cut one that will fit. It was only going to be $20 though. Maybe i'll try home depot.

Anyway, here are the pics:

The night i bought it (For $60 ):

Here is the only writting that is on it. I still cant figure out who makes this (Also you can see all the peices of glass still inside the frame):

I Need to change the locks to, but here is the code thats on the lock handle:

Here it is ghetto rigged to my truck... Yes my existing Hard tannue cover is under it. It did NOT get scratched up though, because the whole inside of the blue cap is carpeted

here is the window (That is missing) it has a frame but thats it. (There is also a 3rd brake light I'm happy about that too!)

Ok, two more pics:

I have 4 clamps for it too which ill use once I get the glass fixed and put it on my truck

So if anyone has any ideas who this may be made by or a good place to get a replacement glass or plexi glass from, let me know. Oh, and the locks replaced on each corner (the guy i got it from didnt have the keys)

I did call one of the local truck topper places and they said it would be like $350 to replace the glass and they might have to order it :(

Anyway, here it is.

THank for any help!

go into the yellowpages, and look up either "glazer" or "glazing" or "window glazing" or "glass repair" i would NOT look for automotive, call them, give the height, length, and thickness (roughly) and tell them what it is for, also that 2 corners need to be rounded they will cut you a piece of tempered glass to fit... can't see it being more than $100

as for the lock, go to a lock smith, show them the lock, they can probably cut you a key for 15$

plexiglass is easy to use though, just trace out the shape you need, draw it on the plexi, and use the plexi knife to cut it out, take your time, especially on the rounded corners

i would put the tempered back in... but honestly, it makes no real difference... plexi will scratch easier, but it probably won't break again,,,

the biggest differences would be price, and it's going to be less desireable if you try to sell it (with the plexi)

yep, its on top of my tonneau cover. lol, i dont have a place to put the cap. I can move the tonneau into my apartment but not the cap. I have film equipment in my bed at the moment, so i want it to stay dry, safe and secure.

It came off a 99 ranger ext. cab. I saw it. It will fit mine perfectly; once i remove the tonneau cover.

Totaly cool.

Ok, so I'm think that once I get back to illinos, I want to paint the cap black to match my truck then mess around with metal fabrication. Anyone have any cool pics of a ladder rack type deal that will sit around my cap? I'm thinking of lifting my truck, then fabbing something up that will hold a spare tire above the cap and then have it extend over my cab to put some tights on for off roading.

Let me know if it sounds cool or ghey. Thanks guys!

cool. By the way, I just got plexu glass from Lowes. I got 2 piece of 1/8th inch thick just in case i screw up. Got em for $35 for both. Glass was going to have to be custom made and they guy would have charged me $150 and I also went to a truck cap place and they said it would be about $375 to replace the whole window frame.

I opted with the plexi glass. If i deside to get the glass, then the plexiglass will act as a template.

As for the lock, I went to a locksmith, showed him a picture of the lock with the numbers on it and he made a key in under a minute. First key was $8.50 and the second was $1.25. Awesome deal!

No I just need to drill out 2 rivets so I can measure exactly and then slide the plexi glass in. (then replace the rivets with a bolt a nut.)

Thanks again for all the help! I'll post more pictures of the top on once I wash it which should be tonight, and once i get the plexi glass in. It fits awesome by the way!

When I went to the cap place and they did tell me that it was Innovation brand topper. which is now out of business.

use a carrage bolt, with the flat side on the outside, that way people can't diassemble it without opening it... plus it would look a little better, IMO

Thanks for all the help and advice, especially to --weezle--.
I ended up just using regular bolts and nuts. It turned out pretty good!
Now I just need to find time to wash it.
And yes, i'm going to be a picture *****. (Sorry, i dont have any of me working on it) Well, here goes:

Where the nuts and bolts are used to be 2 rivets. I drilled them out to get the plexi-glass in there. Now if i ever need to replace it again, It will be very easy to take the bottom peice off and slide a new piece of glass or plexi-glass in there.

I did get luck though, I didnt have to buy any new weather stripping. It was still all in there along with peices of broken glass; I just pulled them out, got the glass out of em, and then put the weather stripping back on the plexi glass. Now its water tight again! Pretty good find!

In total here is what I sent on it:
Cap (Craigslist): $60
Plexi-glass (From Lowes): $35
Drill bits: $5
Jig Saw (Black and Decker): $20

TOTAL: $120 --Not to bad in my opinion. Now I just need to get the 3rd brake light wired, wire some lights inside it so I can see in it at night and get it painted... I'll wait until I get back to Illinois to paint it.
