Just painted the tails, looks like crap

Painted my tails with nightshade. Looked great until I put clear coat on. Looks like **** now. Not shiney at all like they were. I'll get a pic later.

How long did you wait between the nightshade and the clear?

robert99ranger 12-20-2009 02:03 PM

hour

What kind of clear did you use? Try automotive clear coat from a paint and body supply store. It is leaps and bounds better than the off-the-shelf stuff.

robert99ranger 12-20-2009 02:06 PM

I used the duplicolor top clear coat like in the how to

It's much harder to get professional quality results (that last) from a spray can. I hate painting things with them. Automotive paint and a spray gun is the way to go if you can.

robert99ranger 12-20-2009 02:11 PM

Oh well, I'm gonna put them on there and not worry about it. Gonna go to my grandma's for dinner then put them on the truck when I get back

rangerboy101 12-20-2009 02:14 PM

You can always wet sand them and do another coat? Maybe that would help some.

drppdyllwrngr 12-20-2009 02:19 PM

i've found/used a nice clear in spray form. it's called u-pol. i guess a lot of body shops use it for door jambs. lays out nice, polish's up really nice.

I'm sure you could figure something out. If nothing else strip them back down, redo the niteshade, and take them to a body shop to be cleared. I'm sure it would not cost that much, and it would look great.

Whats the weather like where you are painting them?

MugenCRX04 12-20-2009 04:06 PM

I used rustoleum clear and mine turned out great. Make sure its not humid out when you paint them and take your time with everything especially prepping.

^nice work right there!

01_ranger_4x4 12-20-2009 04:17 PM

how many coats did you apply?

robert99ranger 12-20-2009 05:40 PM

The weather is 65 and no humidity. I'm painting in my basement. I am on my 4th coat of clear. It has gotten a little better but not much. I've spray painted lots of stuff so I know what I am doing.

I am just gonna keep applying clear coat to it and see if that helps.

TrndAssassin 12-20-2009 05:57 PM

You need to Fine wet sand between coats of clear Robert...I used a Krylon clear coat..from wallmart on mine....and wet sanded with like a 2000 Grit when I was done..to get mine to look shiney!

robert99ranger 12-20-2009 06:00 PM

Ok, we will see how they look later. I'll grab a pic of them when they dry some more

robert99ranger 12-21-2009 07:56 AM

Ok, after about 5 coats of clear they look good. Got them on the truck. I will take a picture with the truck outside. Its kind of crappy out so its not gonna look good.

Redneckstone 12-21-2009 11:13 AM

yes wet sanding and polishing is always the secret to a good finish

demiseranger 12-21-2009 11:21 AM

Nice work, the niteshaded tails go really well with the shade of your truck! If I would have kept my stock tail lights I would have just done that, or painted the amber red.

robert99ranger 12-21-2009 11:25 AM

Thanks guys. I thought about just painting it red but I had the nightshade from dustin so just used it. I only out 3 light coats of nightshade on. I didnt want it to dark. Just enough to take some of that orange out.
