Modified Reese Hitch

Had a DUI driver tonight decide to modify my Reese hitch tonight. Sitting at a red light and his caprice never slowed down. This is the exact reason I keep the it on there. Didn't jam it or anything either. Will get better pics tomorrow in the daylight.

Didn't bend the frame did it?

If not, what was it that bent?

No didn't bend the frame. It bent the arms coming down from where it bolts and bent the bolts too.

Well at least it didn't bend anything other than the hitch.

$70 hitch is easy to replace, rear bumper and tailgate aren't.

Still sucks tho'.

Yeah but his insurance is going to be paying to fix whatever needs it. May have to have the exhaust redone at the tips since its all up on the left one. If he had been in any other car, the hitch probably would have went into it and done more damage. May modify this one to look right with a body lift. We'll see.

Did you floor it and pull his bumper off?

You must have a really low deductible if you are going to go through insurance with a $70 part....

Since he got rear ended the other parties insurance is going to have to pay for the parts.

Oops, had the understanding the other guy didn't stick around or something..

I keep my ball hookup on all the time for the exact same reason.

The guy hit me with a 89 Caprice so there was no damage to his car whatsoever. Which is probably why there was no more damage to my truck than what's there. Once he hit me I hit the strobes and i was still in uniform since I was on my way home from work. Think that scared him into staying. The trooper told me that he locked the guy's buddy up earlier that day for DUI and the guy that hit me was the passenger during that stop. Talk about an idiot.

I'm guessing police because of his front plate.

Firefighter going on 10 years, EMS going on 5 years, and Police going on 3 years. LOL I'm gonna get a new hitch and modify that one to look good with a BL in case I decide to go that route.

Just to update ya'll on this....My modified hitch is still modified and will be for a little while longer. Got a letter from his insurance company stating they aren't gonna fix anything. Apparently either he's not insured or the car wasn't. If he wasn't DUI I wouldn't worry about all this but i'm gonna get my insurance company involved and let them handle it.

I would get the black plastic piece replaced on the bumper (looks like there is a knick in the middle) hitch, ball, exhaust fixed.. etc..

It's just the way the picture is taken. There is no other cosmetic damage at all.

nice!

i had a little incident very similar to this... had my hitch insert in the hitch....got rear ended....i had a scrapped up paint on the hitch and a slightly dented bumper. And behind me was a totaled Nissan Maxxima w/ dealer tags still on it. Soon after, I had a check in my hand for $1800. Moral of the story...keep a hitch back there with something in it.

He's not at fault, so there's no claim from him to his insurance company. It's the other drivers insurance company that will be paying for the damages.

Make sure to get the frame checked just for good measure. Now's the time to go over everything closely back there to make sure nothing is cracked or slightly bent. With a no-fault accident like that, you can get a lot repaired or repainted thanks to the other guys insurance company.

Good luck!!

EXACTLY!!
I find drive-thru's the worst. People try to jam up right behind you just to place an order at the box instead of waiting a few seconds, or just anywhere in line. I've punched a hole in a Ford Windstar's plastic bumper cover and took out a grille on an Escort. Both times I just got out and laughed at the driver. Since it's considered a "parking lot" accident, it's 50/50 no matter what. Both times the owners knew they f*cked up and never bothered to switch insurance. Guess I got lucky, but on the same note, it serves them right to have to pay for their own f*ck-ups in life.

Yeah I been waiting on the adjuster to come out before I messed with anything. Was gonna tell them it needed the frame and suspension checked out but.....no one has ever come. Friday got a letter stating they ain't paying for anything so about 3:45 today i'm gonna be giving them a nice little phone call and figuring out what the hello is going on.

This is also the exact reason I keep my hitch back there. Too bad he was driving a caprice....woulda felt better if I had seen at least some damage.
