hey guys I just saw this thread and thought i would throw up some pictures of the rack i built for my jeep this winter to get my spare on the roof so i could fit all my ice fishin gear. Its kinda thrown together but not bad for a one night project. Heres all the pictures I got of when i was building it.

the mounting pads of 3/16' x 3' strap welded to 1" square 11ga tube I had all the material laying around so it was pretty much just time and sleep it cost me.

I mounted it to the stock rails using more strap bent in a U to hook under the lip with a bolt to cinch it down. Im gonna build one for my ex cab ranger soon that mounts to the drip rails.
I cut the long bars to the desired length and tack them then put it on to get everything square.

basically then build the outside hoop and basket if you want one. for the tire carrier i did a cross bar with a nut welded to it and some rebar welded to a bolt with a large fender washer. I used 1" emt conduit for the rest of it and it held up fine. I could stand on it without bending. I used a regular hand conduit bender for the bends.

Ok, so I know this looks rediculous, but i drew this up and this is my dream setup on a 2004 ranger fx4 (optional level II ) For now all I have is my 95 xlt, which will do for now. I can always make stuff for it that will/should be able to adapt to any ext cab ranger (hopefully a 2004 though)

On this picture there is the rack that I am hopping to fab when I get home in a month along with a pretty sweet bumper; I must give credit to PUNKROCKPILOT for that cause its basically his, with a few modifications.

Also, there is a sunroof on this truck, which the rack will go around, along with a visor; I love the look on Fx4wannabe01's truck so I want it on mine.

Anyway, Im wondering off the topic of this thread, so without further ado, here is the drawing of my roof rack:

not rediculous at all. thats similar to what im planning. I want to be able to put two spares on the topper and other quick grab items on the cab basket for camping and road tripping and still be able to put a canoe up there if i want. heres a sketch....

Very nice! That's very very similar to wat I want to do, I just don't want to mount the rack to the roof of the truck or cap, I want to b ableto take it off and use it as a. Ladder\storage rack without the topper\cap. I was wanting toput 2 tires on the rack as well! I just didn't draw them.

Very good work!

You could craigslist something like this, but one that fits around a cap, then use that as a base to do your custom fab work. That way you know what your starting with is straight. just weld your crossmembers between the rails.

dang that looks really good

i wanna do something like that, but only to just have the explorer roof rack itself. any modification needed to make them fit?

i looked at the yakima site, but i don't think this specific one came up. it didn't mention anything about mounting to the door frames.

ya i found on rps that the mounts to the door frames were from a ford contour and that the baskets are a universal fit........its just the mounts that your specifically trying to get.

makes me curious now cuz theres a honda civic on craigslist with a yakima basket for sale....

If you run through the fit to your vehicle process on their site it should suggest the Q towers and cross bars for fitting to the cab. The Q towers are universal and come with a specific plate that latches in to fit your make/model. So if you get any used q towers/rack you should be able to go to a yakima dealer and order the plates to fit a ranger. Make sure the cross bars are long enough. My rack was from a buddies contour that I modded for my girlfriends escort, and then for the ranger. Instead of buying new plates I just bent them to fit the ranger cab. The yakima racks are $$$ but deals can be found used sometimes.
