I've been fixing various little things since I got my 02 ranger. this weekend I tackled the rear right fender rust.

I started by stabbing at all the weak parts with a screwdriver and ripping all the rust wide open. I then took care to knock out all the flake rust I could from between the wheel well and the outer fender, sanded and brushed what I could, then gooped in JB Weld and sanded down. Then I primed, painted, and clear coated with Dupli-color. After all that sat around for a while I sprayed between the wheel well and outer fender with Black Oil, a kind of grease-in-solvent rust preventative spray.

So how long would you guess this will stay looking pretty? I'm decent with rattle cans, so right now you can only tell I did anything if you look closely. I'm hoping for a few years out of it since I figure by then rust will be coming through in other places.

btw, I used JB Weld because there was only a small gap between the outer fender and wheel well and I wanted something tougher and stickier than bondo.

 

sounds like you took the time and did a decent job. i'd say you'll get at least a year or so before the rust resurfaces or spreads.
