Why is everything painted

Ok I am probably gonna catch some flak over this one but why did ford paint everything on the edges. I prefer the chrome and gray plastic foglight area and black fender flares. I don't know but when they paint everything it looks like some street truck and as much as I scratch it up going hunting it looks worse. Anyway just wanted to question this.

Its just another trim package available to customers.

04blackedge 07-14-2008 08:19 AM

I bet you can find someone to trade with if you want something different. I personally think Edge flares and valance with a chrome bumper looks awesome.

dakota772 07-14-2008 10:55 AM

I think it is more of a trend that started a few years ago. As you hang around on this forum and other ranger forums like RPS, you will notice most guys are going for color matched everything. Personally, I like the chrom accents. Which is why I got a 4th gen Ranger with chrome bumpers, chrome grille surrond, and chrome wheels. We are a dieing breed I think.

Chrome don't get you home.
Yeah, but neither does paint.

I'm with you on this. I love the fact that I have chrome on my black truck. Not knocking you other guys, it's just a personal choice..

sambob117 07-14-2008 11:15 AM

I enjoy my chrome as well, but the gray plastic don't cut it

Me too man, I was looking at my truck when I parked it in the garage today, chrome and black just go so well together.

I hate chrome thats why I like how everything is painted gives it a cleaner look! (when washed lol)

zabeard 07-14-2008 12:58 PM

painted = cheaper

I agree. I only like chrome rims and exhast tips. Glad everything on my 07 is painted. Plus I don't think chrome would like right with the DSG color.

2004xlt 07-14-2008 02:10 PM

chrome is my favorite color

My05edge 07-14-2008 02:17 PM

def with dsg, chrome with that color just wouldnt look good unless done right. just look at my old truck and oh5edge's truck, dsg looks better all colormatched

I'm going to go two tone like I had my 93 Ranger with the bottom and fender flares done in either black spray on bed liner or paint.

Fx4wannabe01 07-15-2008 01:42 AM

I axed chrome.

the paint shouldnt chip due to the additives in the paint to make it flexible.

madman4049 07-15-2008 01:57 AM

doesn't chip but desert terrain and brush scratch it up alot.

morris 07-15-2008 01:58 AM

i bought an xlt cuz i couldn't stand the solid colour look of the sport or the edge packages. even the fx4 didn;t apeal since it had those unproporsioned fender flares with the fake allen bolts. i've got chrome on my front bumper, mirrors and tail pipe. as for my rear bumper, it's painted to match.

i do agree with zabeard. it's cheaper also. i noticed this when i worked for a bumper factory. the metal for truck bumpers is getting less and less. example. i worked for a chevy truck bumper feeder. the metal was only like 6" tall and ran the length of the bumper. the rest was plastic. either the grey textured stuff or painted to match.
in my opinion, it's a joke especially on a fulsize truck.

trucks = heavy duty

it's hard beng heavy duty with plastic.

Fx4wannabe01 07-15-2008 02:03 AM

Morris...you have a chrome front bumper? what? .......painted bumper cover........

Ford had, and still has, this whole "monochromatic" themes going on with certain trim levels.....EDGE came out as a "sport" pkg, much like the Sport, much like the Splash. Some punk kids, like me, think chrome is for old people....and we prefer the all paint thing. That's just my way of looking at it.

red_fx2 07-15-2008 02:05 AM

as the saying goes: chrome wont get you home.

I like the look of color matched everything.

Machine090767 07-15-2008 03:12 AM

i like my edge. the all red truck and all black accessories go together perfefctly.
now, do you guy's honestly think the "chrome" bumpers are really chrome? i doubt ford uses real chrome.

madman4049 07-15-2008 06:42 AM

doesn't matter what they really are I just like the looks better and they don't scratch in brush like paint does.

Pretty sure when the chrome bumpers are clean they show scratches as much as paint. If you have ever seen the rough plastic material after it has been scratched then you know it looks about 100 times worse after off road action.

I only drive my monochromatic edge in mild conditions so the flares have held up great. Plus they put a special elastic paint that allows the flares to flex and the paint not to bust.

Oh well personal preference I guess.

Whoa?! I know this will vary per person, but that is a brave statement to make. You know that chrome is a more expensive finish for metal than paint?

I obviously think the opposite is true. Of course this idea probably comes from my old school mentality. I like the led sled look with a pair of shiny chrome bumpers....it is just awesome!

john93rangerstx 07-15-2008 07:53 AM

i agree im not a chrome guy

Lone Ranger 93 07-15-2008 08:15 AM

I used to have alot of chrome and liked the look, just too much maintence to keep it looking clean. That's why I got rid of my chrome bumpers, wheels, tips, and trim. If I still had time like I did when I was in high school to sit around and polish all my chrome everyday I'd probably still have it.
