Crossmember Gone....

For starters, by crossmember I am referring to the piece that the front bumper and front tow hooks are attached too.

What are the negatives to not having a crossmember? How would one go about getting a (new) crossmember added?

I've seen a bunch of guys weld in a stronger box or even replace it with a front hitch welded in.

it is a good cross brace, remove it and the frame rails will twist.. not recommended.

Do you have any links or any extra information on either of these concepts?

Dealership did this without my approval but apparently ford does not sell a replacement. I'm fighting tooth & nail... but my best bet now is to either A) Get one off a junked vehicle or B) Have something custom made.

I prefer option B but I definitely would like some guidance on what I can expect.

(If any of you so-cal guys meet, this problem is not the problem that may prevent me from attending the May 12th meet)

Why did they remove it??

Do a search, I think rangererv has it modified. I know I've seen it done a few times, either reinforced or a front hitch.

The one that they removed is sitting in the back of my truck so I'm pretty sure it was on before.

I may have got the crossmember lingo confused with something else, but read my original post for the exact description.

My parts guide said it is serviced only with frame assembly, why did they remove this? without it you are basically "destabilizing" the whole front end, not to mention in case of accident.

They said the Helm's repair guide procedure (which ford stands behind) says to remove it and add tabs onto the front of the frame rails so the bumper can still be mounted.

The dealership & bodyshop are both saying its perfectly fine, strong as before. As a result, my insurance company believe this is fine too. I need some quality information I can send to insurance and the dealership that says the opposite... help?

I have the tabs on the front of my 99, thats how it came from the factory. I see no problems with it.

I'm going to start hitting the junkyards for a replacement. What years and models have the best stock crossmembers?
