I no longer use my spare tire holder. So, can I cut this thing out?

Does it hold any strength for the frame? If it does, then my custom bumper will make up for that.

I see that it is supporting something of importance towards the rear. Its a black plastic box thing (I have no clue what it is lol)

I think Ryan (RazorsEDGE) cut his out, but im not sure.

Any Ideas guys?

 

I wouldn't myself, it acts as a brace for the frame.

 

do you want to take the whole thing out, or trim it back?

 

you can cut it out but need to replace it with tubing, and no bolting a bumper to the back wont make up for it.

 

I wanna know what that box is.

 

Ah ok. Thats why I was hesitant.

I might just cut part of it out. The part towards the rear that folds down. Also the cable assembly deal. I want that thing out.

I have plenty of tubing, and thought about welding some in there. But I dont really want to weld anything to my frame.

I think it might be part of the evap system. Somebody correct me if im wrong.

i have no idea what black box you're talking about =S the only thing i can think of would be that pulley for the spare...ive got part of my carrier cut out tho...just a square for my old bumper i had with a built in hitch, and some edges to get it to sit flush, but most of it is still there, and my rear end folded pretty good when it got hit...if you cut it out and welded some square tubing in there it'd probably actually strengthen up the rear.

I heard those things where the biggest PITA to remove. Like not even worth it.

 

You can take out the thing that folds down, but the tubing is a frame support. you can cut that out, IF you replace it with another tube.

 

Do you have any pictures? I would like to see how much you cut out.

 

My spare tire is in the bed. And that little tube like 3/4 inch thick or whatever? Huh. didn't know that was frame support. Well i used it to pull some pretty big bushes out of the ground last year and its bent now :D

 

I cut the back half of mine out, not the entire thing. I just cut out enough to make room for me to mount my hitch. I used the hitch in place of the back half of the tire holder. It does brace the frame and I wouldn't cut it out without a good support to replace it......ask Zabeard for some pics of what can happen.....

The black plastic box thing is the charcoal canister.

I have a funny story about Charcoal canisters. My cousins (same cousin with the Lifted jeep on 35's) father in law is a hippie, theres no doubting it, Tree hugging vegan hippie, his whole family, that being said. they have a Honda CRV. i'm all for american cars and what not, but if we're going upnorth and my cousin is driving we take the CRV. we went way up north once, like almost to the up, but not there yet. and we're in the backwoods driving around. and we ran over this stick that kicked up and took out the charcol canister, i was still in UTI at the time, so i was like, "charcoal canister, We don't need no steenking charcoal canister" so i threw it in the backseat, we drove it the cabin no problems. next day we're going home and i go to turn the radio on, nothing. go to roll the window down, nothing. CRV all of a sudden dies.
so there i am, on the shoulder of highway 33 zip tying a canister on. after we just about died casue we thought we had killed the battery or something.

 

I sawzalled mine all the way to the charcoal canister and put my square tube bumper on and rocked out. Haven't added a brace, though i'm sure i will, just not on the agenda right this minute.

Thats what I was talking about when I said I wanted to cut the rear part off that folds down.

 

The spare tire cable assembly is bolted on. You can take that off by just unbolting it. I did the same to mine when I had it.

Yeah just replace it with some square stock. I don't know if you remember D but he did that to his.

 

I have plenty of 2inch x 3/4" thick square tubing (beefy stuff)

What do you guys think if I cut out the carrier and weld two piece back onto the frame?

I havnt really decided yet. I might just trim some of it off, then see.

The square tubing will be enough. I say go for it.

 

Ok so I looked at the carrier.

Ill just cut it back to the piece that holds the charcoal box thing, then weld two piece of square tubing back in place.
