Air Snorkels
where can i get one of these...i go through some really deep water where i has sucked it up into the motor and it all wouldnt have happend if i had one of these set ups....i have looked and only came across ones for the euro rangers...

Ok so I've been talking about this thing for months. I just got a new digi cam, here's pics of my snorkel. I ran my auxillary intake from the cowl box. I figured it was a good compromise. My truck isn't old at all yet so I'd hate to start putting holes in my fender. It's invisible and let's the old girl breathe easy up to four feet deep.
Here's the 3" Gate Valve I used.
Here you can see the aux intake re-enter the engine compartment via the pass. side fender going into the cowl box. I sprayed the PVC with the same stuff I used on my grille. Kinda like a bedliner spray for plastic.
Some shots of the stock airbox. I sealed all holes, cracks, seams and joints. The old fram air filter sets in there perfect. You can see the gate valve on the outside of the box, as well as where the aux. intake leaves the airbox into the fender. Sorry I don't have any fender off shots. I didn't feel like ripping it apart again just to get pics. It's a 3' piece of PVC with (2) 90's. lol

It definitely worked. I dipped the entire front end into a pond and left it running for five minutes. Backed her out and examined all the piping, filter, and maf. All 100% dry. No water in the airbox either. It works great, you just gotta get past my three different colors of leftover silicone =].

Outside of what? You mean inside the fender? like I said there is a 90 elbow coming out the airbox, a 2' or 3' section of PVC, and another 90 elbow back into the engine compartment. Sorry my kid sister broke my digi cam a week before I did that part. Or do you mean outside the cowl? You can see it inside the cowl box, I angled the section that went into the cowl box so the falling drops of rain didn't get sucked in so much. I also painted that with the black as well so it didn't stick out. The thing sounds sweet. I had to open a hole larger than the stock intake where the "stock snorkel" used to be and when it's fully open it still tries to pull air from the snorkel. You can hear it all the time. It's crazy!

I am still somewhat confused. Where is the end of the pipe ? Are you sucking air in from the bottom of the windsheild ?
I know I have had water come up over my hood and splash on the windsheild.

yes it goes into the cowl box between that block of wires and the hood hinge, it was a tight fit. I cut an angled on the piece of pvc that goes into the cowl box. It has drains on both ends of the cowl box (under the fender) and the inlet is two inches up from the bottom of the box. After my initial test of setting the front end in the pond, I put her back together and took a lap. I thought about the **** splashing over the hood and rolling off the windshield too so I had to test that theory too lol. I took her to the point where water was getting in my cab so I did a three point turn at the opposite bank and got a good running start at where I initially entered. It was like the Tidal Force ride at HersheyPark man. lol Water sprayed everywhere. I took everything apart again and there was no water in the box. So far so good.
As for routing into the cab, it'd be a good idea and a b1tch at the same time. I'd have to tear apart the dash and all the ducts and blowers. Screw that! I just wanted to feel a little better about my intake offroading and like I said, it's set up now so that I can take the fender off and pop it through the fender when she gets a lil older.

Yes it's 2". I wanted to go with 3" but made a compromise to beat some tight angles. It's holding up awesome.
Actually, I used it yesterday morning during flood conditions in my area. I closed the gate valve before I even started the truck and went. It goes fine with the snorkel on, loses some power(if you're racing someone, lol) by closing the main intake inlet but that's expected. I was driving threw a mild downpour going through 2'-2.5' of water. The water was going up on the windshield when I'd start cruising in it. I came home and checked the box. Dry as a bone! No, I've been thinking about it though. I use a Fram Premium paper one.
I should do some research and see which would be better(utilizing the snorkel anyway). The K&N prolly is less restricting, so I'd get like .023 hp and a half oz of tq lol.

I see. I have a 2000 explorer and I have the same stock airbox location. I think I am gonna do this since I stalled my truck in a mud hole last weekend. Luckily I got it fired back up and running normal. Thanks for the great design!

I've been talking alot to the guys on the forum and they suggested using an oxygen sensor safe silicone or aircraft sealant to seal the airbox.

man I really like this idea and I am going to consider it. I am going to wait until I get the lift and tires on then see how my nerves like the water in Wharton.
At stock height and tires I have scared myself sometimes. Like last week when the bow wave went over my hood and water hit the windshield. I just about crapped my pants. Especially since I was by myself (bring on the flaming).

Not hard at all. Just gotta get over drilling a 2 1/2" hole through your engine compartment. With the airbox mod I did, you could extend the snorkel anyway you'd like. When my truck has seen better days, I'll stick it out the fender. It's alot cleaner the way I have it. You wouldn't know it was there(how I intended it to be). The entire point is to raise the intake higher than the stock location. This well definitely give you another foot or two of confidence.
