The electric modules on the valves are way too big. I checked into those as well =]

I had a plumber's supply catolog from a dude I build houses with. I pretty much looked at everything possible.

Couldn't you just use a screw in cap. You would have to open the airbox everytime but it would work and they are cheap and easy to get.

I was running around w/o a fender doing trial and error for a week. I took all the headaches out of it.

 

This is a awesome way to do it too. Just have to make a holder for the cap somewhere under the hood or keep it in the glove box or something. FX4ME posted a good thread about this. They're called "Deck Caps". Having to keep track of that cap seemed a lil less convenient to me than the plunger style gate valve. You'd have to mount the twist cap on the side instead of the front, I just don't see anyone sticking their hand down that small crevise and twisting the cap on. Which means you'd have to block the original hole and cut out a new one on the side, plus it'd be sucking hot air off the engine.

 

I just assumed mounting it to screw in from the inside. You'd have to take the box apart everytime you wanna use it but I really don't see that as too much of a problem.

 

That ebay offer, the valve is like $25(shipped to your door) and it'd be easier to mount than the ($10)deck cap. All you have to do is pop the hood and open or shut the plunger handle, then shut the hood.

The deck cap is a good idea but not neccessarily the best one with the 4.0 SOHC setup. I have no idea how a 3.0 would be or a 4.0ohv. So I can't give you any recommendations on either of those as I'm not familiar with the airbox setup.

If you plan on using it alot go with the valve. If you're doing it for fun or only gonna use it once in a blue moon, then go with the deck cap. Good idea mounting the cap on the inside though! Didn't even think about that. For as much as my trucks go "swimming", I just wanted something quick.

 

I guess I will just go with the valve......lol I've been swayed. The airbox is the same for my OHV as yours and the 3.0 and 2.5 and 2.3 for that matter. That would be all motors 98-03 cuz I think they changed something about the box in 04

 

Seriously man, it's well worth it. If you're going through all the trouble to do this(removing the fender, chopping the box up, runnin pvc everywhere, cutting holes in the engine compartment) you might as well do it right and make it easy on yourself when you actually need to utilize it. With the valve included, I'd say it cost about $100 for all materials. It's more labor and head scratching than anything. I'll have a detailed how-to I'll be submitting hopefully in the next week, so that should help alot of ppl out!

 

Yeah the 04 airbox has metal latches on it... I have trent's airbox in my shop cuase i thought it would fit, but it doesn't... the tube that plugs onto the air tube isn't the same either...

and I had it all nice and clean, too...bah.

 

On my offroad forum that I am a member of there is a guy on there that was selling this snorkle he bought in Mexico its an ARB Safari Snorkel from Melbourne, Austrailia. He got it for $330 it fits any Ford Ranger or Mazda trucks from 98-2007. If anybody wants I can check to see if he still has it.

Yeah, I hooked up with him on ORR and I'm pretty sure the last time I talked to him he sold it. I could very well be wrong though, wouldn't be the first time.

What i was thinking of doing was getting the K&N FIPK with two filters. Ill run cone filter that comes with the FIPK kit on the street but i will use their new appollo filters when i go offroading. The appolo is basically an enclosed filter that comes with flex hose. Inside is a normal K&N filter but its sealed in an aluminum or something housing that has two ends to it. One end u attatch the intake to and the other u attatch the flex hose to and run the flex hose wherever u want it. Yes u can separate the housing to get to the filter inside. It even has a rubber gasket where it separates. Just tie down the flex hose when u run it and leave it in when your not using it. I was going to run it up the inside fender.

 

 

if i remember correctly, that guy used an extra hood, and when normal street driving he uses a stock hood and doesnt use that setup

You could just cut a hole to your cab. Then you wouldn't have to mount it on the out side.

 

That's impossible on my '03 but the same concept except it goes into the fender and back into the engine compartment.
