shifts are smoother
engine seems to be running smoother, like I don't have to give it as much pedal when cruising along


this intake is about 3 inches higher than the intake to the stock air box
I am going to fabricate a bucket type guard to help prevent water ingestion
plan is to modify a 25 pound spackle or joint compound bucket (half size bucket)
this way I can slip it over the collar of the intake and then tighten the charger back on
there are also some screw top frozen chum buckets that might work well also

my first idea was to slip an extension onto the intake and run it upwards over the radiator overflow
unfortunately it will have to head back towards the intake manifold for hood clearance
this will likely cause me to loose the performance gains
the bucket guard with a splash lip and top intake will probably work better
just need to find the right bucket and lid then seal it all up in a manner that is easily removed for street use

anyway - definite performance gains and it is not too loud with the hood closed
performance exhaust is next

hey, heres what i did on mine for a shield, get you some 8 inch sheet metal ducting, trim to your desire, it slips right over the base of the filter and i held it on with a hose clamp

I bought it from Stylin Concepts - $296 including shipping
it shipped directly from K&N in California - no one has them in stock yet
Stylin Concepts did not even know they existed - I got the part number off the K&N web site
no this will not pass California inspection, but I am sure it is just because they are slow handling the K&N request for approval
I would check the K&N web site for the make and model you need - the 2004 models were just introduced and most parts distributors do not even know they are available

no it is not, airchargers are not CARB legal and FIPK's are

the only diff. between the two i sthe CARB certification, the design is edxactly the same. K&N changes the name once they get the certification. my intake took about one year to get certified and once it is you can request the sticker

so chances are it will become legal for california street use???

im still wondering aboutthe 77 series or something in like an anodized red like the cai's for the 04 4.0's

well Ben more power would be nice, I am not quite sure if this device alone will provide it though

I use the engine cleaning solution at my local quarter eating drive through car wash
looks to be a simple green type solution and I rinse it off plenty good
LIL BLUE has fuel injection, no distributor, former air box (have to be careful with the open filter now)
- about the only thing I kept it away from was the alternator, fuse box and computer
I even wash down the fabric cover, just avoid too much direct pressure and use water only

Swoopie pointed out quite a few cracks and crevices where the dirt and mud can hide in both the engine bay and under body way back in February 2004

I think K&N say they are worth a few ponys not may but a few. I will have to try cleaning mine up one day.

Justin - you provided the link and have read the previous posts.
What do you want to hear because it is very obvious that it is sold for 'off road use'.
Why not send K&N a note and see if they have an expected approval date from the CARB?

IMO I can not see how it would not be approved as it employs the factory MAF and has a connection for PVC.
In NJ they would never know if it was approved or not and we have VERY strict emmissions testing.
They check on a dynometer and use a sniffer to monitor the tail pipe emmissions.
Unless CA pops the hood and looks for any aftermarket parts I doubt you would fail.
It looks the same as a FIPK (name changes after certification) which has CARB certification.
Installing this device does not require you to bypass any factory emmissions settings nor change any fuel calibrations.
Tail pipe emmissions should remain the same, maybe even improve.

I bought a FIPK air intake kit about a month ago and it is approved and it looks exactly the same as the one you put on your truck.
