im so excited i just got home and checked my ebay account and found out that i won the cluster ive been watching for the last 3 days. finally ill have the cluster ive wanted sence i bought my truck. and from what ive read the 01 explorer cluster is a direct bolt in mod and that the one im getting and cant wait to get it in. so as soon as its in ill snap some pics and post them up.

 

awesome, cant wait for pics...Ive always been a fan of the exploder gauges over the stock ranger ones.

the explorer cluster will plug right in on the rangers? I really like how that looks and might have to do that myself.

i paid $45 for the cluster from ebay and took about 45 min. to put them in thats it. and is the best mod ive done to my truck yet cause i really like them alot.

yea those are nice but i dont think they will go in my 2000 though. cause didnt they change the plugs for those clusters.

 

Do you have a night pic?? I take it if they bolt in you '00, they should bolt into my '98??

 

Also, is there a difference between the sport and the sport trac??

That is correct. 2004+ is not even close to plug and play on a 95~03.


The tach wiring should already be there. Just plug it in.


Almost. The factory 03 XLT gauge face is silver but the Sport Trac is white (Explorer Sport, too, IIRC).

Something to watch out for, especially when buying online from a photo: the white and silver clusters are made in 2WD and 4WD versions but the black ones are universal. That's because the cutouts for the 4x4 lights are highly visible on the lighter clusters but barely show on the black ones (unless lit, of course).

 

I've got a 99 Regular Cab 3.0L V6 XL work truck and I've always hated not having a tach. I'm currently bidding on an 99 Explorer gauge cluster with mileage that is about 2K off of my actual mileage.

So let me get this straight. I just remove my old cluster disconnect the wiring, find the tach wiring harness (what does it look like??), plug everything in, and re-install the dash and I'm done? Just wanted to make sure before I tear into my truck.

The tach wire is a tan/yellow in one of the 3 connectors that are already plugged into your tachless cluster. Plug the same 3 connectors into the Ex cluster and the tach should work.

I found a 97 explorer with the cluster still in it and going back on lunch to get it. THey told me $10 for it if I pull it myself. I didnt think that was to bad at all.

 

It is important to know that the indicator (idiot) lights have been moved, added and deleted over the years. Even though the 95~2003 Ranger, 95~2003 Explorer Sport, 2001~2003 Sport Trac and 95~2001 4-dr Explorer clusters will physically swap and the main gauges should work, some of the various indicators may be incorrectly labeled afterward.

 

Well I got my used 99 Explorer Gauge Cluster in today. I've been under the weather since Friday evening, but seeing the UPS guy pull up made me feel a bit better. Well I removed the old cluster and carefully removed the PRND21 cable. All the idiot lights are in the proper spot which I figured would be the case going with the same model year cluster. Everything works great except for the dash light down by the fuel gauge. It was so bright outside that I didn't see that it wasn't working, but oh well it shouldn't be so hard to get to the second time around. Thanks for all your tips and information!

When you replace the bulb, do yourself a favor and replace all six. When one goes, another is usually a month or two away from failing.

Stock replacement is #194 but supposedly #194LL (long life) bulbs last twice as long. You should be able to get all six for under $10.

 

Yep your thoughts were exactly like mine! I went down to wally world shortly after I posted earlier and grabbed 6 new 194LL bulbs and took care of that problem.

I used to own a 97 Range Rover 4.6HSE Vitesse and about once a month I was changing out one of the six 194 bulbs for the third tail light. Finally I stuck six new 194LL bulbs in there and for the last three years I owned it I never had another bulb go out. Same goes with my 03 Series II Discovery. If you put Sylvania SilverStar H7's or any other non LL bulb in vs the stock Hella LL H7's they blow out after about two weeks of use. Long Life bulbs do serve a purpose.

what about your tach? isnt it going to show the wrong miles, on the wrong odo, thus beeing odo fraud? anyone?
