Auto to manual swap

My buddy Austin blew out his built tranny in his 98 4wd... the red rocket on 35's.

Now he has the 4.0 OHV with an auto trans... His question he wants to know, will the 5spd he's buying go right in without any problems? His main concern is will it match up to his transfer case?

He's getting the trans for $600 and him and his dad are putting it in hopefully before the weekend before the meet... He said he'll be into it about $1k for the swap...

Need some help on this guys! (For Austy)

It should bolt right up. Same output bolts/flange. If it's from the same year, or a year that had his same tcase.

Does he have a doner truck? I know theres quite a few parts you need, small little things...

I'm doing this when my trans goes again

yea all the linkage/joses clutch pedal, brackets, slave, resivour and a bunch of stuff im forgetting, somehow the neutral safety switch, i would just say bypass it.. that way you dont NEED the clutch to start it or put it in low.

The only bad part about bypassing the clutch, is if someone 'new' to the truck goes to start it.. and lets say its parked in gear and they start it up, cause it to roll forward/backward, possibly damage it.. I would probably keep the neutral switch available

Yeah, he'll have everything tomorrow for the swap... That is unless he needs a manual trans ecu?

Swap will be done on Friday night and up and running for the meet on Saturday! YES!

EVERY automatic related piece has been taken out...trans, ecm/ecu/pcm blah, trans cooler, trans lines, the megashifter, the column cover(now a manual cover he put on a few days ago.....foreshadowing?). still gotta pull the torque converter though.

tomorrow is the full on install of all the components....maybe even drive it!

He has every piece he needs(trans, flywheel, clutch kit, slave, master, foot pedals, clutch safety switch, pcm/ecu/ecm blah, gave him a shifter. some more.

need to figure out the wiring harness a lil bit...but thats easy.

Expect update tomorrow night.

Trevor...when we doin' yours??? You know you want to ever since the first time you drove my truck man.

HAHA...yea...so austin converted to floor shift using a B&M Megashifter for a console. So I found him a manual steering column cover to hide that ugly hole where his auto shifter used to be. less than a week after installing that cover, and less than 2days after driving my truck for the first time, his auto takes a crap. I sense some foreshadowing goin' on yo. lol.

How much estimate it parts will this cost????

I had a shop quote me at $500 or so for the labor....

The guy said the computers are weird in these years, and something about an internal slave cyclinder?? ALSO::he said it might work but could through a CEL since the wiring harness's are different??
ANybodu heard of this??
What percentage rate of doing this, will the conversion work flawlessly??

Estimated cost of all parts is approx $1000. everything. We're having some PCM/ECU issues with the 4wd. we can get it into 4hi, not low. Ive been searching through threads and trheads in different places and running into issues. I'm thinking it's about the clutch safety switch, which can be bypassed and is bypassed on stock auto trucks. Using a 2000 trans, a '99 4x4 manual trans 4.0 ecu. Weird thing is.....it runs and drives using the auto ecu. it'll just crank over and not start with the manual ecu.

It's running and driving. now it's time to work out all the little kinks. Like what to do with the automatic electrical plugs on the trans that are just danglin' right now.

Is the ECU from the same year? I think it has to be the same year, I thought I read that somewhere....

I hate to dig up an old thread, but I think my automatic is acting up and if I don't figure out what is wrong with it then I want to put a manual in it.

My question is, did you ever fix the 4x4 problems? I had planned on keeping the stock wiring harness and just getting some new tunes written with the trans. codes turned off. Would I still have the 4x4 low problem? This is still up in the air whether I do it or not, but I am doing some research anyhow.

Thanks,

Chris

Yes, it was resolved as soon as I showed him how to operate it with a manual truck! lol. Clutch in, shifter in neutral, brake pushed in, and it'll go in and out of low just fine. For what it's worth, the tcase wiring is completely seperate from the transmission wiring.

This chronicals Trevor's manual trans swap...covers all bases. Yours may be a little different with it being an '04+ truck(wiring differences)...but all but the wiring and even that will mostly apply to your truck.

Hah, Okay.

Thanks, I have the EVTM and shop manual to refer to just in case, but I was just wondering how it turned out for you. Thanks for the info man.

Austin's '98 turn out flawlessly. Trevors '01 turned out flawlessly. Both function just like a stock manual truck.
