Was the shaft portion on your replacement fan clutch bigger than the factory one?

DSC00771.jpg?t=1229484976

The shaft on my factory one is smaller requiring a 7/8 size wrench.

At the shop one of the mechs there was trying to tell me that this one is too big to go back into my truck. I didn't want to contest him because he's helped me on a few things before, but he has instilled some doubt into my mind. I tried for the second time today to remove the old fan clutch and was unable to get the old one to budge. Nothing the shop had was able to hold the water pump pulley from turning. We used a hammer on the wrench to try shocking it loose, but no go.The mech was looking at the new fan clutch and was saying the threads are too large. I'm wanting to think the threads are the same, just that the shaft was smaller on the old one. Any feedback on this?

Ok, on my 1995!!! for ranger... the threads were left hand thread (left tighty, right loosey :) ) Anyways, I took essential a big chisel (dull) and a 3lb sledge and set the chisel on the right side and popped a couple hard times and it came loose, same way to tighten it back up..

I found out yesterday that as you're looking at the engine from in front of the truck the direction to screw on and tighten the fan clutch is COUNTER CLOCKWISE. I stopped by NAPA and asked for a water pump for my truck. They had it and I test fitted the clutch to the pump. So, it turns out that I was trying to unscrew my old clutch in the wrong direction. I hope this helps others in the future.

Well I just tried to change it but no luck. The fan clutch tool kit I rented has too big of a wrench for the nut. Oh and on a 4.0 its counter clockwise to loosen it.

I can't change it for the life of me. The tool kit they rent doesn't have the right size and I can't find the right size wrench to get it off. I even bought an adjustable wrench and it's not big enough.

FINALLY

I finally got the darn thing in. I love how quiet my truck is now. My exhaust is totally stock, but now has a nice deep tone to it and I got back a ton of power.

The new fan clutch requires a 36mm or 1 and 7/16 wrench.

Good rule of thumb for fan clutches is, if it is a smooth pulley, then it removes counter clock wise, (right hand thread). If it is a grooved pulley, then it removes clock wise (left hand thread). And the best tool ever to remove them is this one.

yes you will need an air hammer, but it will get ANY fan clutch off.

Just for these Rangers I'd prefer the wrench I bought and a strap wrench around the water pump pulley. It was so easy with these. I didn't have to hold the strap wrench during removal. The handle of the strap wrench is pushed against the alternator pulley during removal so I didn't even have to hold it as I turned the fan clutch. With the new fan clutch I dabbed some anti-seize compound in the threads. So far so good and she runs like a dream.

No, it sure doesn't. No stickers at all anywhere on the shroud or the radiator support.

I tried with a kit like that and couldn't figure it out, either. I bought a strap wrench at Sears. It has a rubber strap unlike the orange plastic one pictured near the top of the thread. Grips much better and made this worlds easier. I don't use the terms lefty or righty because they are not understood the same way by everybody (if that makes any sense). Clockwise or counterclockwise (as you look at the engine from standing in front of the truck) are better understood by most everyone.

Clockwise to get off? I tried using the rubber strap I have but I could not get it tight enough to stop the pulley from moving.

The big square end goes around the pulley bolts and you attatch a breaker bar to it if it is just the head.

My clutch isn't stuck on but it squeaks in the morning when I started. At first I thought the water pump was going but I stopped the fan and the squeaking stopped.

There were no bolts in the pulley unless you're refering to the 4 bolts that attach the clutch to the fan. The bolts are too short for the kit that I tried. The wrench to hold the pulley was too thick and wouldn't allow me to thread the bolts back into the clutch. I'd bet the same would happen with GER's kit.

No it goes over the bolts that hold the pulley to the water pump.

I just looked it up on www.napaonline.com. They show the actual part for most of what they sell instead of representative images. The pump does have four threaded holes, but as mentioned I never saw bolts on mine.
