is 10w30 the way to go?
 

I've changed my oil twice now since I've owned it and used Castrol GTX high mileage 10w30 both times. should I be using 5w30 as the manual states or does it not matter what kind I use. I'm going to be changing my oil within the next month just curious about it. I was thinking about using that Castrol edge anybody use this yet.

I tried the 10W oils in mine. I lost mpg's as well. I went back to the to the 5W.

5w-30 will be thinner when cold (5 weight vs 10), allowing it to flow more easily. It will then be a 30 weight when warm. So you shouldn't notice any mileage differences. I'd run 5w-30 in it, Ford recommends it.

personally, I would defienetly run 5w30 in the winter, and whichever in the summer

i run 10 w30 in my ranger and i have no problems

It depends where you are. A truck in Florida will benifit more running a 10-30 oil, where's you will get better out of a 5w. It depends on the average temp where you are driving.

I run 5w30 most of the year...but from about Nov to Feb, I run 0W30. Warmer oil faster = happy oil and efficient oil.

I'm usually 5-30 up here in the winter and either 5 or 10 in the summer.

Have you seen the new "Fuel Economy" Mobil 1? 0w30 can't wait till someone uses that crap in the winter.

I think you might have gotten the weights confused. You want to run a lighter weight during the winter, because when the oil is cold, it thickens, making your oil system work harder.

And the oppisate in the summer, Like a 10w, because it is thicker and in turn will not thin out as much. When the oil thins out, it will not lubricate adiquatly.

You should really use EXACTLY what ford recommends PERIOD! Engine tolerances now adays are so exact that they run best with factory recommended oil weight!! TRUE STORY.

Ask your self THIS why does ford tell you to put in 5w-30 and not 10w-30??

If ford recommended 10w-30 in your particular truck then you might very well be asking about 5w-30 in this thread, are you following me????

im not 100% but im pretty sure my 01 3.0 flex specifies 5w-20

Well think of it this way. How many different regions are there in the US? There is everything from dezerts to swampland to mountians. There is no way for Ford to recomend a different oil, and then install that oil in every different region. This is a guide line. That is why they say "Recomended", because that is all it is. I bet that if you look in the service manual, or possible the owners manual, it will give you a temp range for the oils. What could be the proper tolerences in Arizona, will not be in Indiana when it is -20 degrees out. Like you said, common sense prevails, and so does science.

I have been experimenting with some 0 weights from Mobil 1 and I like them. Though this is in a perf based car, keep that in mind.

I don't like to stray too far from what Ford recommends. They recommend it for a reason. I still use Motorcraft filters in my car, and whoever doesn't needs to. That or Napa Golds. All the rest are pretty much garbage.:biggthump

I've always used 10w30. Out here the temps are hot and even on the coldest nights in winter it is still 38-40 degrees (not for very long). For most of the year it's warm/hot. Today the high is 87. It's only March 2nd too.

I have always used 0w-30 because it gets so cold here in Michigan. If you live in colder climates, I would not run 10w in something that calls for 5w.

Dang I've never heard of 0w30. I'm going to go buy the book this time though. I can understand why not to use 10w30 around here cause in the winter time we can get down into the -15's.
