250 vs 350 ATV
So I'm going to purchase a Yamaha ATV this weekend, I just don't know if I should get a 250 or 350.. I'm 5'10", 170lbs and feel like the 250 is big enough but I'm not for sure how fast it would be.. anyone able to help me out here?
|
imo id get the 350 i have a 350 and im the same build as you and the bike is perfect for me
|
How fast have you gotten that thing goin?
|
im way bigger then you and my buddies honda 250ex hauled with me on it.
i had an arctic cat 300 4x4. it was a BEAST. i had it up to 60 on the road. it had a speedo and everything. i really miss it. |
honda 450 or bust
|
I'd get a 350 out of those two options. I've got a 2001 Wolverine 350. Back then, it would run with the huge 500's that were out. Now everything is 700cc or bigger. I can keep up on technical stuff, but on long straightaways I don't have a chance.

go the 350.. i borrowed a grizz 700 for a weekend from work (yamaha shop just over a year ago when i worked there) and i had the grizz doing 80km/hr down the paved road. i got one speed when it comes to trails and thats fast i usually ride around the 50-60km/hr range..
im 5'6" and was about 160lbs when i was riding my 250 and it was underpowered and i started doing stupid stuff on it because i knew what it can and cannot do. im wanting to get a grizzly one of these days. are you going new or used?? what about a kodiak 450? |
Which ATVS are you looking at?
|
2 or 4 stroke? Top speed has little to do with displacement and more to do with gearing. Plus who cares about top speed on atvs, you should be more worried about acceleration and handling.
Ps. You should get a bike instead. Much quicker, better handling, can go more places and cheaper. Sorry, had to throw that in there. |
These are the two I'm looking at
250 - Yamaha 2008 Raptor 250 350 - Yamaha 2008 Raptor 350 I realllly don't want a bike, the guy I'm going to ride with has one and it sounds logical that we would get the same thing so we can go the same places, but bikes really aren't my kind of thing, plus I can drift easier with a four wheeler =] |
Do you only plan on riding the dunes? If so then a quad is fine, otherwise, for your buddies sake, consider a bike. But to each his own, jus gotta preach my beliefs lol. But go with the 350. IMO don't get anything smaller than a 450 unless you are just learning because eventually you will want one.

Have you rode quads before or are you learning? |
I rode my uncles utility about 5 years ago but that's about it
|
If I was you I would look for a cheaper used Raptor/Warrior to get started on. I guarantee you will be wanting more speed in about 2-3 months and wish you would not have spent so much money.
I would buy a $2,000 ATV, get used to it and trade it in on a 450 or something down the road. |
personally i would go with a 400ex. They are similar in price and you will outgrow the power of the 350
|
ya get a 400ex i just sold mine im 6ft and 190 and it was still fun to play with plus you can find them all day long for $1500-2000 in great shape
|
dude, def a 350 at the minimum. not to be a @$$ but my 13yr old nephew already hates his blaster 250. i have both a raptor 350 and 660.. the 350 is plety of fun, theres lots of parts available and they are pretty affordable.. either way do whats comfy for you .

The raptor 350 is basically a rebadged warrior, it is super reliable. I have a warrior from 1997 on the original piston and the valves are still in spec. the raptor has reverse as well, which may not seem like a big deal but it is so nice especially in tight woods. The reason why the 400ex would be ideal is cause of its reasonable price new as well as used, 05 and up have reverse, it makes a decent amount more power than the raptor 350, is lighter, and has the best chassis ever on a sport quad, derived from the 250r. |
