3.9L Cummins Diesel Vs. 2.3L Thunderbird Turbo

If you were able to put a engine into a 93 and older ranger. Which engine would you pick?

The 3.9L Cummins Diesel

Or

2.3 Turbo engine from a ford Thunderbird

Diesel given the two options.

It's a truck that deserves a truck engine.

Which Cummins are we talking about? The 5.9 or something smaller?

I want to know which will be done to both. Those little 2.3 Turbos can take some boost well, and a Diesel is just plain cool.

IMO...it depends on what type of ranger you want to build...

Me personally, I'd want to build a Gen1/2 in the form of xcab long bed dually. Slammed on 19's, and powered by a hot 4BT.

If I want a fast little sleeper street truck.....2.3T pushin 300 would be plenty for me.

I voted the super chicken motor. A sleeper 4 banger would be sweet.

Ohh I know, they're potent with the right about of cash and support. It's just the powerband/winter weather factor why I'd go 2.3T > 4BT for a DD. Anything but (even a stock FX4 a 4BT would be a wet dream) I'd kill for one.

From the research I have obtained (I planned on doing a swap into my old Samurai), anywhere from the stock 150hp/300lb.ft to 300hp/6xxlb.ft before the stock crank needs replaced with an aftermarket unit. Mathematically speaking 2/3's of whatever you can get out a 5.9/6BT (the original 12 valve).

Other than that my knowledge is limited, but like said, they have potential if you can afford it.

200hp and 4-500lb/ft of torque would be killer in a ranger. The frame would need a lil more strength probably.

I'm reading of blazers with 4bt's getting 25-27mpg. That's sick!

This guy is "claiming" 30-35 mpg, in an exploder. That is freakin impressive. And the swap is not all that expensive. Most trannies will bolt right up to the without major modification. The ZF 5 spd bolts right up. I have been kinda looking around for one, and I have found several complete older Lays delivery vans, that are running perfect for less than a thousand bucks. You could take the motor, and part out the rest if needed. Make your cash back easily.

2.3t it's a no brainer. Add a little moding to it and you have 300rwhp easy. idk, but I'd say its way more fun (for probably less money) than a diesel.
