Global Ranger caught test again. Spy shots.

EDIT: Thread title should read "Global Ranger caught testing again. Spy Shots."

Ford has done a lot of work over the past few years to really improve its F-Series line of pickups, in both standard F-150 and Super Duty forms. And while the Blue Oval's "Built Ford Tough" motto stands true to the latest and greatest versions of these pickups, the smaller Ranger has been greatly overlooked over the past decade.

These most recent spy shots show Ford's new global Ranger, and we firmly believe that this new truck will, in fact, be sold in North America. The automaker's new "One Ford" global vehicle focus will deliver a host of revised products to our shores over the next few years, and we're glad that the mid-size Ranger pickup is finally getting a long-overdue update.

Our spies indicate that this new Ranger will be slightly larger than the version currently on sale in other markets, but that it's actually somewhat smaller than the truck currently sitting at U.S. dealerships. Still, we don't think this will hinder Ford's overall sales of the Ranger too much, and this much-needed overhaul will make the small pickup better positioned to compete with the likes of the Toyota Tacoma, as well as the Nissan Frontier/Suzuki Equator twins.

Do I see a factory roll bar?

hope they still offer one with at least a 6' bed. I understand wanting some more cabin room for the kids and dogs and buddies while you're wheelin and whatnot...but I have a hard time calling a vehicle a "truck" if they don't at least offer a model you can throw a fishing rod or mattress in the back of.

...and diesel would be key

those rims are interesting and 6 bolt. it's also hard to tell if the bed is separate from the cab or if it is like the avalanch/ridgeline.

that is also rhd and not in the states. lemme kno when there is one with MI or something else from the lower 50 as a license plate.
to me, all this means is there are testing ones in other countries and not over here.

i'm getting tired of these threads/pics. why can't they get off the fence already? there is a market for that class of truck and they know it. it won't outsell the f-150. it won't save the planet. market it to compete along side of the 150 or as a cheaper alternative. offer smaller engines. a turbo deisel I4, a turbo gasser v6, a gasser I4. 4wd. look at the toyota or others of similar size and just make the damn truck or put it to sleep.

They won't ever make a diesel. How many people do you think would actual buy them? Not very many. A diesel is a lot of work to keep going maintenance wise.

Most ranger owners just want a small truck to drive.

How many people on here would trade in there Ranger they own now and go out and buy a diesel version that cost at least $30k? I Guarantee only 5% of the people who say they would, actually would.

I could possibly see a small V-8.

They have been caught driving around MI tons of times. This would apply to us since Alan Mulally wants this truck to be global.

I couldn't agree more. The Diesel in the US is unfortunately a waste of time for R&D. Diesel prices are still higher than regular gasoline, and there are now even stricter Diesel emission standards in place for 2012. We were going to get a Diesel F-150 till the emission stanards thing and the price went sky high.

As for the V8, I'd love to see one, but realistically it won't happen. Remember the V8 Colorado? Remember the price tag? The 3.7L V6 puts out more power than the current 4.6L V8 in the 'Stang. That would be a wonderful powertrain choice. Along with maybe two EcoBoost engines in I4 and V6 configurations, and that new 2.5L Duratec that is found in the new Fusion.

Diesel power is the future. As for the 5.3 colorado they are still producing them. The dakota was one of the first "mid size" trucks to offer a v8 platform and they're still selling. One of the best "mid size" trucks imo

Diesel is a lot of work to keep going? One of the main advantages of a diesel engine is that it is significantly LOWER maintenance than a gasoline engine. You have a beefier engine built to handle higher compression, fewer moving parts, no ignition system, lower combustion temps, and a less corrosive exhaust product. Everything all the way back to the tail pipe on a diesel requires less maintenance than a gas engine.

I agree with you about everything else though. Most if not all of the advantages of a diesel have been counteracted by diesel fuel prices catching up and passing the prices of regular fuel (there goes the advantage of your better fuel mileage), and companies deciding the diesel options on their vehichles was worth an extra $5k or so (there goes the advantage of your lower maintenance costs). They'd be great for off road (easier to waterproof)...but all the other bennefits have been equalized. I can't see many buying them other than those who just want to hear a diesel start up in the garage...not that there's anything wrong with that. Plus, if they could do away with the diesel as a more expensive option, I bet they'd sell as good or better than their gasoline counterparts.

Lets run down my maintenance cost vs the Gasser
Mine:
15 quarts of good oil - $44
Oil Filter - $20
Fuel Filter - Every 2 oil changes - $18 - So well make that $9 a change
$73!

Gasser:
Filter $18
Oil - $30 for the good stuff!
$48

Now this is a bigger truck, but its going to be the same for the smaller truck. Its going to take more oil then the Gasser and need more maintenance.

I would assume the newer diesels don't like the cold as well. I am sure they are better then my truck, but they would still need a plug and or place warm to sleep at night. Not sure how many people would want that.

I'm not talking about stuff that goes wrong with the engine as it gets old, I am talking about maintenance cost. A diesel will outlast a Gasser any day. But how many people these days keep a vehicle more then 150,000?

I noticed the diesel cars do pretty well, but why buy a truck with a diesel that has less power then its gasser?

IMO, I think a V8 in a small truck is a waste of time and probably just an ego trip - v8 Colorado...does it really tow more than a 4.0 v6 Ranger? For guys that really do need a v8 for towing also need other things to go along with it that actually help increase towing capacity, like larger heavier suspension, larger brakes, heavier drive train components, etc...hence a larger truck, like a full size truck. Don't see too many guys saying they sure wish their compact truck had a v8 because it sure would make life easier when they hook up the 30' Airstream on weekends - I'd guess that 90% of the Rangers on the road mainly do light hauling like 6k or less...probably a lot less, and adding a v8 to the design won't add 4k to the tow rating. Personally, if I needed to tow 10k I'd get a F-150 (and probably get better gas mileage) instead of looking for a Ranger with a v8.
