2001 Mazda B4000 4x4 (same as Ranger)
I turn the switch to 4lo or 4Hi and there is some clicking near the passenger floorboards but no light comes on the dash and no 4x4.
I havent been offroad for a very long time but have recently been in 4x4 and it worked.
I checked all the fuses and none are burnt in the engine or in the cab.
I know the bulbs are not burnt out because they both come on when the vehicle starts.
Any suggestions?

Are you actually engaging the transfer case into 4WD? You can test this by making a hard turn in either direction on a hard, dry surface. If the vehicle starts to buck, it's engaged.

Sounds like bad\failing 4x4ShiftMotor on back side of TransferCase, directly under drivers seat.
Can be tested by
~ blocking wheels, ParkBrake engaged
~ removing 4x4ShiftMotor, 4 bolts, leave it plugged into harness
~ have someone switch 2WHi~4WHi~4WLo then back to 2WHi while you watch motor triangle socket rotate or not rotate.
If it rotates proper, then 4x4ShiftMotor is likely getting weak\failing & needs replacing.
If it does NOT rotate proper, likely a bad 4x4ConMod behind passenger kick panel.
Your 2001 B4000 should use same Motor & ConMod as my 2001 ExST, but do confirm these part#s:
4x4ShiftMotor
~ FordMotorCraft# 1L5z-7g360-ca\1L5z-7g360-cb\yL5z-7g360-aa\1L54-ca\1L54-cb\2L24-aa\yL54-aa\1f24-17645-a\1f24-17645-b
~ CarDone#48-202
~ Dorman#600-807\600-926
4x4ConMod
~ FordMotorCraft# 1L54-7h417-ab\ac\ad\ae

Best to excercise TransferCase once a month, so you got confidence its good to go when you need it.
If MerconLV (not MerconV) in TransferCase has NOT been renewed in last 33kMiles, now is a good time.

Thanks so much for all that info. I will try that. Should the vehicle be in Park, D or Neutral or probably doesn't matter?

Fully Block at least 2 wheels & engage the ParkingBrake.
Put Tranny in Neutral to fully enable shifting the TransferCase.
Have a helper keep their foot on the BrakePedal & operate the DashSelector
while you watch the 4x4ShiftMotor rotate.
