Cruise Control Issues

Hello ladies and gents,
I have issues with my cruise control on my 2006 Ford Ranger. It seems all the controls work (they all react in a normal manner) except for the actual fact of maintaining speed. The lights come on (and stays on till i hit off my breaks or speed drops below 40km/hr {yes I'm in canada hence the km's}) but no one is home, If i hold the "set Accel+" button down it seems to try to accelerate but it only does it slightly and intermittently. I am thinking either it is a faulty module under the hood or a bad cable leading to the throttle. Help please .. I am hoping to not have to call the dealer if its something i can fix on my own.
