Exhaust isn't going to make a difference, I wish people would understand that. Everyone sees those stupid commercials and think they're gaining HP and MPG's

Probably because he doesn't know how to calculate MPG, or his driving habits changed

His speed and acceleration got worse yet his MPGs increased. And how hard is MPGs to calculate? Fill up your tank, reset your trip meter. When the tanks after you put an exhaust on last longer than they did before you apparently improved your MPGs.

People/companies defiantly over exaggerate HP/MPG increases from exhausts, that's for sure. But facts are facts, a blocked up exhaust isn't good for the engine and when your tank is going further than before it's not coincidence.

BTW my buddies exhaust is a full headers and everything back system. It's got a fake cat that just a pipe, a resonator, and a fart can on the back. No o2 sensor either. If that changes anything....

 

I don't care what he tells you, driving more aggressively will decrease mpg's. He probably doesn't know how much his tank holds (including reserve)

Cars and trucks are tuned from the factory with the factory exhaust. Changing the exhaust will not make a huge difference, it will really not be noticeable

The only way my MPG's changed was my driving habits got better, not because I have a Flowmaster

 

Just because when you switched out your stock muffler to a flowmaster you didn't see MPG changes doesn't automatically mean that exhaust work doesn't affect gas mileage. A full exhaust swap is a hell of a lot different than a simple muffler swap.

For sure driving more aggressively decreases gas mileage but that just goes to show that even on top of worse driving habits the new exhaust improved his MPGs that much more.

I think part of it in his situation was that the stock exhaust was so so badly clogged up that it was hurting his gas mileage. Has he put a completely new stock exhaust system it might have gave him the same MPG increase.

I am actually glad you posted this because I have been getting 12.5 MPG and it sucks big time. I am getting ready to move half hour away from work and this is the last thing I need. I hope the cat is clogged on mine too so I can get better mileage.

 

I think the lesson we've all learned here today is that you shouldn't be clogging your cat up with anything at all. in fact, just don't even own a cat. dogs are better anyways.

 

In all seriousness, I found replacements online for around 70 bucks. Can I just replace it if it is bad? If there is no 02 sensor then I should be fine with replaceing it I would assume. i dont really want to just cut it off

if you have a O2 after the big cat take it out and put it after a pre cat problem solved

 

They sell these goofy 02 sensor spacer thingys that might work if you all want to ditch it as well.

I ran no cats on my srt4 and ran that goofy spacer and never threw a light so I passed emissions with no problem.

 

I reaaaally need to do this. I'm just waiting for school to get out so I have time to do it. I'm just going to be gutting my cats though, which is somewhat the same difference.

 

My 2002 3.0 2wd (stock tires,225-70-15)only gets 19, city/highway makes no difference, always 19. I know it will be less with ethanol but I wont have those numbers till after I calculate a couple tankfulls.
It kills me that guys with taller tires and 4wd are getting better mileage than my truck.(assuming they know how to accurately calculate mileage)

265 is the width. middle number determines height

That's what we do here in echeck counties in Ohio so we can run no cats or straight pipes. They sell those spacers and o2 sensor blockers or whatever at all the autoparts places.

Personally I'm just gonna get a high flow cat from Summit for $70.

 

Those things are a life saver, we used them on my aunts 02 mustang when we put a full magnaflow system in it.

 

Wrong. Middle number is a ratio. To answer. A 265 70 tire is roughly 31.8 in tall

 

i've always thought that was a stupid system. good ol american units we just say how tall, how wide, and what size wheel. give a ratio and you have to do math to figure out how big your tire is.... dumb dumb dumb.

 

You mean 30.8, 265 75 is roughly 31.8
and the middle number does determine the height. Its a ratio that describes the sidewall height.
