Almost lost my Ranger (and maybe me) last Saturday

Was getting ready for trip up north, and west, to the Oregon Coast from Southern Oregon.

Didnt even make it out of Grants Pass, when I had to mash my brakes to avoid getting hit by a late model Chevy Suburban (was woman driving) that completely ran their red light. Their light had been red for some time, so must not have been paying any attention.

My light was green when I was still a half mile away. As I got closer to intersection, I saw white suburban passing cars in lane also waiting at the red light. (this was a major intersection, with a road from downtown crossing 4 lane highway that I was on). They popped out of nowhere as I was approaching the intersection, and I mashed down on the brakes, shattering my left front pads and warping the rotor as well. I have studded tires all the way around, and the local cop that stopped to assist (my truck stallked and would no restart afterwards) measured my skid marks at almost 175 feet long, from all 4 tires.

I barely missed the Suburban by mere inches.

First time in a long time where in a couple of seconds, I thought my life was going to be over pretty quickly. I got lucky, and only going to incur a few hundred dollars in brake work over next couple of days.

That was WAY too close.

BTW - the other driver slowed after going through intersection, and then gassed it and took off leaving the scene. My truck was stalled in intersection, and I had the wind knocked out of me from hitting the steering wheel (I was wearing my seat belt).

Now the fight with the insurance company to help pay whatever damages I did to truck by stopping so fast (new brakes, calipers, and rotors for front, and probably alignment too)

Glad to hear you're alright, sounds like it could have been worse.

Keep us posted on the insurance claim though. I highly doubt they'll cover any of that seeing as there was no accident. Brake pads shouldn't explode under a one time hard brake and a rotor shouldn't warp in a matter of seconds of hard braking. Sounds like an easy way to get replacement brakes, rotors and calipers for free to me.....LOL But I won't tell anyone.

Just got off phone with mechanic.

Caliper shot (knew that already)
Brake Pads/Shims/etc left at scene in pieces (knew that already)
Rotor checked out fine
Alignment needs to be done.
No leaks anywhere.

Should be back on the road tomorrow.

Question now is, I never knew that brake pads and such, and caliper, can just fall completely apart. It was under a lot of stress, but thats just amazing.

Police never found vehicle. They asked me if I got a plate or saw driver. How in the world am I supposed to do that when I am bracing myself for a gigantic impact that I narrowly avoid.

Not going to file a claim either. Gonna only cost me about $400 total including the tow.

That shouldn't happen. Parts of your truck should not be falling apart from slamming on the brakes like that. What on earth as wrong with your truck in the first place to make that happen?

Mech says it looks like the pads separated from their metal backing, or maybe small chunk came off, and it took out everything with it.

These were brand new Carbon Metallic pads that I had only installed 3 weeks ago.

The pads/calipers are fine on the right side of truck.

God I hate drivers who don't pay attention or just don't plain take driving seriously, it's pretty much my biggest pet pieve. Glad you and your truck came away essentially unscathed.

Glad you're okay.

I think they should start teaching the PIT manouver in driving schools. It would take road rage and retaliation to a whole new level of revenge. LOL

street light for dummys (version costa rica)
red -> pass at your own risk blowing ur horn
yellow -> run as hell and just remember u still got 4 more seconds before the other side turns green
green -> blow ur horn as hard as possible so the guy in front of u starts driving...
