Anyone own 2 Rangers?

I've noticed that a lot of folks with a 4WD Ranger also own some kind of little 4 cyl car for use as a daily driver, but does anyone own a second 4 cyl Ranger instead and use that as a DD? I've been throwing this idea around a bit seeing as older 4.0's are pretty cheap and I could keep the 95 4-banger for regular use (22 mpg) and use the 4.0 (16-17 mpg) on weekends and during bad weather. What do you think?

The thought just crossed my mind when I was thinking about trading in my 95 for a newer model Tacoma 4WD king cab, but damn those things are expensive. $22,000+ in my area for a used 2006 model? There's no way in hell I'd pay that much. A house the next town over has a mint 1999 king cab 4.0 4WD Ranger in the driveway for $3,800. I could buy half a dozen Rangers for the price of a single used Taco. Anyway, I just wanted a few opinions on the matter.

I've heard about those, but I've never actually seen one. Ford hasn't made those in years, right? I know Toyota makes a 4wd Taco in a 4 cyl, but I've heard their mileage is terrible and you're better off just getting the V6. Something about the 4 cyl engine just not having enough power to fully support the 4wd. Again, that's just what I've heard.

Some came factory. I almost bought one last year for a couple hundred.

I have 2.

My beater is a 2003 auto 2.3. bought used w/ 78K on it, now have 83K as of March '10. I use this as a winter truck so I don't get salt or snow on my nice truck.

My nicer truck is loaded with mods and tons of work, its a 2004 Manual 3.0. It dosent ever get dirty or even driven in the rain. Bought that new, and it still looks new.

I've always been dreaming of getting my project: econoSLAM ranger started. My Ranger now is 8" or so of lift and on 35's. Isn't exactly efficient...but what V6 heavy little truck is? My little brother has a 4cyl reg cab 2wd 5spd ranger and it pulls some AWESOME mpg numbers. I'll do it someday. Have the econoSLAM truck as my DD and the big truck as my winter rig, tow pig, hauler pig. 34mpg hwy is alot better than 19. lol.

98-02 reg cab 4 bangers are pretty cheap with lower miles(at least in my area). About 3-4k for a 100k mile truck. XLT's too with options.

Heh, I would like to build a severely lowered and Subaru EZ30 powered turbo Ranger.

i have my b2 for off roading and my mazda for dd. with the b2 im getting 17mpg and the mazda gets close to 30 mpg

sniper_101 03-27-2010 07:00 PM

Not two, but most V8 swapped guys see the same, if not better MPG than their previous V6, plus more power. So that's my econo-mod, a 340hp, 3500lb 2wd truck, lol.

scott5640 03-27-2010 07:09 PM

how does shanes 4.0 get 19 when my 3.0 gets 17?!

94Ranger355 03-27-2010 07:11 PM

Welll>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>.

I've got 4 sittin round here:439:

No 4X4's though, just not my thing, and no need for em down here IMO.

It's called being geared correctly and knowing how to drive my truck efficiently. Not to mention having the power to stay at speed. Same way guys with v8's get better mpg's than stock v6's. That's highway.....yes i get 19 average on the freeway with 4.88's and 35's and a manual trans. Shoot...tha'ts all at about 75 in 5th at 3000 rpm. lol. This engine loooves rpms for efficientcy. What I swear by...what tought me about fuel consumption: ScangaugeII.

I have two rangers. The 4cyl is being sold to another member her. Definitely dont need it now that I have my dads f150.

scott5640 03-27-2010 07:40 PM

very true, when i lift mine, ill need new tires and a new regearing....shane, when are ya gonna accept me on FB?

deathbypsi 03-28-2010 06:55 PM

I daily drive my 99 4x4. Built 4.0 and it gets 15mpg.

I also have a 88 2wd longbed. Pretty sure the 408w and 75mm turbo will get slightly less then the 15mpg my 99 gets.

And I have my Bronco2 which is like a midget Ranger.
