Ball Joint press help
 

Ok so im getting all the tool/parts together that i need to change the ball joints.
Harbor Freight has two diffrent press and im not sure wich one ill need to get the job done. Heres the links

Oh good thread, i need this info too. Ujoint can be done with a socket and hammer, I know that much.

I used this style: http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/cta...emnumber=38335. Its a b!tch keeping everything aligned. I think you have to modify one of the "cups" that the kit comes with.

Hey tent the press is so much easier to use than the socket and hammer. took me almost an hr to get one out. Took it to a buddy that works at a shop and he had both of them out in 5 min using the ball joint press.

Christian do you know if i will need any special fittings. I know on the doges you do dont know about the rangers

No. The kit I borrowed had a cut cup since it was too tall to fit for a Ranger. Nothing else other than that.

To install them or to lube them?

What is involved in replacing ball joints? Im just curious because I am cranking my tbars and read all over that it causes wear on ball joints. Are they a big deal to replace? How much do the new parts cost? How do you know if they are worn out?

umm new ball joints upper and lowers around around 280 from rockauto.com.

After i install them

I used Moog for uppers and lowers. You have to buy the whole arm for the uppers since the ball joint is cast into the OEM arms but the Moog arms have replaceable ball joints.

Yep Moogs are also regreasable while stocks are not.

what kind of grease should i use tho or dosent it really matter??

If you are talking about lubing them I use some Mobile one synthetic grease. Any grease regular bushing grease will work.

its a good idea to put the new ones in the freezer for a few hours before you install them... it makes life a little easier

Agreed ^^ I also like to heat up the lower control arm with a heat gun, they almost drop right in

The cup I used was in the top row towards the right.

It has a large square cut out to clear the end of the control arm.

I'm guessing your talking about the freezer, I don't think it matters. Just stick it in there for like a hour before or something.
