Spare 32???

I know this is a tire/wheel question, but I think this should fall into general...

anyways, I finally got my spare 32" tire mounted on a used rim (LA used-rim places only charges 15 bucks!!). As of now, I have the tire in my spare-tire holder under the bed. However, it doesn't fit quite right. I have a hitch, and on that area, the tire fits (whew!). Where it doesn't fit is on the sides (left and right).

So my question is, is it detrimental in shaving part of the frame/under-bed area to make the tire fit? I mean, the tire's on there tight enough that it doesn't move much (unless I was offroading). But it does hang a little low.

My second question is, should I replace the cable that holds the tire there? I AM carrying a heaver, bigger tire. Just a thought.

Thanks in advance.

The frame rails have a formed lip around the spare tire opening that strengthens the rail and discourages crack propogation. To make any real difference in the tire clearance, you would need to completely remove part of that lip. You might be able to get away with removing it but I wouldn't touch it.

he prolly doesnt wanna take up space in the bed, if u could fit a big tire in a handy place, might as well just do that.

If your not off-roading, what about using your stock spare? Shouldn't that be good enough to take you wherever you need to go to get your tire repaired?

nah.. i'm not gonan use my stock spare with the 32's.. it's too small...

In any case, I'm cheap, so i'd rather swap out the messed up tire, run the spare to a tire shop, and fix it, haha. I dont' like tow trucks..

i was thinkin of stickin the spare 33 under the '03 like that and it would fit fine if it were not for the exhaust, and i certainly dont want the tire sitting against the exhaust...

Bump.

It's been a while, anyone have any new ideas for holding a 32" spare tire?

glad this got bumped as my spare finally came in yesterday (I ordered it over a month ago).

Will that fagtech carrier mount towards the back of the bed or does it need to be mounted on the flat area behind the tailgate?

Also $160 seems a little steep for it. Someone on the board was building them at one time. Anyone remember who it was?

$160 aint bad considering the price of steel and having something power coated.....

it can mount anywere you want it to in the bed....you have to drill 4 holes in the bed for it........

btw....there is also this flat mount....it only requires the drilling of 2 holes.....

I have a 31" spare because it is the biggest thing that will fit inbetween the frame rails. You have to grind off the two bumpers that hold the stock spare tire in place and then it will just barely fit up in there even with a hitch mounted. Just make sure if you ever get a flat that you have the same size tires on your rear axle (ie. if you get a flat rear tire move a good tire from the front to the back and put the spare on the front)

since i'm running 265's and my spare is a dumpy 225 (i think, maybe smaller) i'm awaiting my fabtech angled tire carrier for the bed. once i get that, it's off to the tire dealer for another 265 and matching wheel!

i actually bought a 32 BFG MT for my spare (used) and it barely fits in the stock carrier. If you are running 32 A/T's, i say get a used (~50% thread) to use as your spare. it will fit in the carrier. It might be a little tight, but if it sits on top (or under) the rails, it's all good too. I have a hitch, and it's still above the lowest point of the hitch. (non-hidden hitch)
