Damn 3.0.... Got some plans in mind...

Well Im just sick of this motor.. Terrible power, bad Gas mileage, mine must have a bad intake or headgasket as it goes through anitfreeze faster than gas and to a 4.0 its a joke... Ive put 20k on my truck since Ive had it. I bought it will 80k and now has 107k. Its a good truck, veritile, fun to drive (minus how slow it is) and other than the motor, just a great truck.. Now heres my plans and I need some input on this.. I wanna get a new motor, but I do not wana waste my time with another 3. slow... Im lookin into a 4.0 swap.. Now my ? is.. is this motor swapable? or do I have to do major change's... Its a 5spd manual tranny, Im gonna be putting a new clutch while Im in there too soo thats not a big deal. Is the dash harness a plug into the engine harness? I think it should be. Is the fuel pump the same one as a 4.0? and how about my little 7.5 rearend? Will it last or should I find a 8.8. I dont drive hard at all. I find 4.0's all the time for cheap.. I kinda wanna lean towards a SOHC motor, but I highly dought this is a direct swap as the 4.0 OHV prolly is.. Let me know what you imput is.. and if any of you know a good instrutional with pics and what I need off a donor ranger or exploder.. thanks guys.. Project 3.slow to 4.go is underway!

If going to a 4.0L SOHC or OHV, you'll need their respectable transmission, the 3.0L tranny will not work. You also need to get the computer and other odds and ends. Honestly, if you do a couple of things to the 3.0L you can wake it up.. I had pullies, chip, efan, intake, exhaust on my 3.0L and it was pretty peppy.

Your's is an older one. My 2002 3.0 is fine.

4.0 swaps aren't that bad. Guys have done them. You need to research the wiring differences though.

I think a 7.5 is totally too small for the 4.0 SOHC -- my opinion. Others may disagree.

The 1998 dash connector is pretty much the same, but there may be a wire or two different from 2002+ s if that's your target.

Fuel pump should be easy -- get the unit from the donor and plug or splice it in.

Later trucks have "returnless" fuel systems where the pressure is not regulated by bypassing fuel back to the tank from the fuel rail. That's different from what you have now.

Yeah, I think the OHV is probably a better swap. I'd get the motor and tranny so you don't have adaptation problems.

Hey, not to be a jerk, but could you break your writing into more paragraphs? It's hard to scan and respond to a big block of text like that, especially with so many details buried in it. Thanks.

thats kinda stupid.. up to you of course.. if i were you, 96/97 ish 4x4.. cheap lifting compared to IFS.. i love my truck, only problem is suspension. As far as power goes, look below.. my truck will burn the back tire off.. and will soon go even farther then that with a cam and ported heads..
