Engine compatibility question

Hey guys,
I have a 2004 ranger 4.0 with a trashed engine. It is 4x4. Can I drop in a 4.0 engine from a 2001 explorer with 4x4? I am imagining I can, but I need to know for sure fast so I don't lose out on a deal.
Thanks!

Welcome to the forum

Yes, that will be fine

Make sure timing chains and tensioners have have been updated before installing new engine, or you will be pulling out new engine in a bit.
1997 to 2003 4.0l SOHC engines had older timing chain and tensioner design that failed, newer design fixed the problem.

Also ALWAYS install a new rear main seal on ANY engine when it is out

Awesome, thanks! Yeah, I was planning on getting a timing kit, especially since the engine I'm getting is hardly low miles and I had researched that issue. I will put a new seal in also, thanks to you. Had not heard to do that. I'm pretty new to this.

Yes, rear main seal is cheap and hard to change in the vehicle, and it leaks ALOT of oil when it starts to leak.
