engine replace

i have a 2001 EDGE great little truck.202000 miles and a compression leak into cooling system. truck still runs great, just went on a 500 mile fishing trip. i live in california and the EDGE wont pass smog. i thought about doing yhe heads but many problems could come from that , then thought about remanufactured engine but the reviews on all the companies i looked into are not real promising. now im back to just doing heads. other then moving from california any suggestions?
thanks

Why does it not pass smog? What engine is it? Does coolant get into the cylinders?

its a3.0 L i have a misfire code that for years has been interminttent but now it wont clear. it will clear as long as it there is no load but as soon as i raise rpm check engine light. no coolant in cylinders or oil and no oil in coolant but combustion gasses in coolant. my thinking if the head is no burned or damaged at the leak point maybe just do gaskets and not do valves, or any top end. i have not done a compression check yet ill do that first thing when i start the project.
