The m5r2 is a supercoupe trans.

It looks like the m5r1 died in 97.

2001-on Ranger (1997-on in Explorers with the 4.0 SOHC engine):
the Mazda M5OD-R1HD is the only manual trans used in Rangers/Explorer with this engine.

M5OD-R1: used for many years with the Ranger 2.3, 2.5, 3.0 and 4.0 OHV engines. Still used with the current 2.3 and 3.0

M5OD-R1HD: developed for the 4.0 SOHC. Beefed up a little over the R1 and has better syncros

M5OD-R2: Not a Ranger transmission. It is a heavier duty Mazda trans used in the FS Bronco and F150 (4.2, 4.9 and 5.0, IIRC)
