i recently put the fabtech 3" spindles on my 05 edge and i put on the new steering stops and now i have a turning radius of a mac truck, ive read how some people just leave them off but they need to pump theyre brakes when they make a sharp turn, what do i need to do to get my turning radius back?

 

yes this is something that i have been reading aswell.. i am thinking of buyin and installing some spindles this weekend and now after reading posts like this im getting nervous.. bump for an answer

 

WELL guys, see I had this problem too except I didn't get bump stops so I had no choice. Having to pump your brakes after a sharp turn is DANGEROUS, I had to swerve off the road many times when I forgot to do this. So, all you got to do is grind off your STOCK steering stops off the back-side of the lower arms, then no more pumping and a WHOLE lot better turning radius. Don't let it scare you out of lifting a truck, it takes all of 10 mins to grind them off.

 

after grinding the stock steering stops do you install the new ones and why is there break pumping in the first place?

 

Nope, after you grind them off, that's it. Nothing else to it. I'm not entirely sure WHY you have to pump the brakes but I do know it has something to do with the caliper hitting the stock steering stop. Maybe it pushes all the brake fluid out of the caliper with the pressure or something, I'm not entirely sure. But I am sure it has something to do with the calipers hitting the stock steering stops. Once you grind them off the bottom part of the spindle is what limits steering instead of the caliper which eliminates the brake problem.

 

meh why do i always get discouraged when hearing the words grinding and other words of that nature. aniwaze i feel i have hijacked this thread.. but maybe jason can find answers in my questions aswell.

 

well ive already grinded the stock steering stops off so your saying all i have to do it take the fabtech stops off and i should be just fine?

 

Yep, the lift spindles stop themselves when turning, eliminating the need for steering stops.

 

is there anything else i should do after i lift it?

It's not that hard to use a grinder, dude. Even if you don't want to do it I'm sure you know someone that has one that'd be willing to help you out. You don't even have to use a grinder if you can find some way to get a piece of metal the size of a marble off, though a grinder would be the quickest and easiest way.

 

well ive done it all myself and its my first exploration into suspensions, ive done the front already and it was very easy, the fabtech instructions are very easy to under stand as long as you have a basic understanding of what all the parts are, but no problems, all i have left to do it put on the add-a-leaf and the rear shocks the get my tires realigned. but no problems.

 

so having an alignment done after the lift is a must? if i get this done it will be a few hours away from home so just trying to make sure that im not going to get stuck or anything.

 

Yep, what me and Jrpro130 and probably a whole lot more people did was unbolt the brackets for the brake lines from the frame and just let them dangle. That gives them enough "flex" to turn and have wheel travel so you won't rip out your brake lines. It's one self-tapping screw per bracket and you just unbolt and let it hang. I've never heard any problems with this and never seen any possible problems either.

when i dropped the brake lines i was afraid of them hitting the frame too much but since you say that i think ill just to that, ofcourse, do you jump your truck? and yes i mean literally jump it.....

 

What I did, since I have torsion bars, I just adjusted those until I got the tires straight when all the weight of the truck is on the ground. I'm not sure if you have an Edge or an XLT or XL so I can't say that you'd be able to do this. Some people said that they needed an alignment and some don't. I think you should be fine, but if you can see the tire's leaning in or out (+/- camber) you'd need an alignment, if not You'd be ok to drive back home.


EDIT: Nah, I don't jump my baby. Come close over some unexpected railroads but never had tires off the ground while going.

 

I'm body lifting by myself lol, one side at a time very slowly.

 

alright well since i like jumping over things i think ill stick with mounted brake lines, ill probably just go down to this shop that here and get them to make me some longer ones, thanks for the help btw

 

i believe i read on here that it wasnt a good idea to jump with just spindles.

 

I would only say that jumping would be safe with either Fabtech or Camburg spindles. Doestch spindles I've seen break after some hard wheelin' when driving on the road.

No problem for the help, that's what this site's for. Just make sure to do something with the brake lines immediately after you finish the lift, whether it be put your new lines on before hand or unbolt the bracket after.

 

btw, where did you get that cool grill at? i think i might want one.....

 

I got them from a guy named "winks" on here. He makes the set of just the upper grill, and then you can add the foglight option to it. And what I did was order a sheet from him and custom mounted a piece in the valence.

 

you will be fine driving for a little while after lifting without getting it aligned... i lifted mine 4 months ago and still have not taken it in to get aligned
