I,m New here and need advise.
My Ranger has 106 k on it and needs some T L C including a new A/C Condenser and Compressor.I,m thinking to also replace the timing Chain,water Pump and Hoses while doing it.
My Main question is.... what Service Manual will be Most Helpfull? and where are O E M parts available??.
Brakes all the way around are due and I want to show it some LOVE

 

I don't know which manual is best but I can tell you www.rockauto.com has loads and loads of parts, both OEM and other reputable brands fully stocked. I've serviced my own vehicles for years ordering rockauto parts. I can't recall a single time where I had an issue with deliveries or anything.

When you replace your condenser and compressor you would be wise to also replace your filter drier.

Can't recommend a manual, as Hanes and Chilton are so generic as to be almost useless.
Another good resource for parts is 1A Auto. They also have many repair videos.

 

Does the 4.0 Engine at 106,000 miles have anything that should be replaced ? I know that some engines have a track record of part failures

 

Well, if your 4.0 is a SOHC from 2001-2004, then start listening for the dreaded timing chain ticking. These years are notorious for the timing chain tensioners going out. They addressed the problem in 2005-up engines.

If it is that 2001-2004, you might get lucky. Mine didn't start singing until 190,000.

If it does, you'll have to pull the motor and replaced the timing stuffs. You can get a complete kit that has all the guides, chains, and itty bitty pieces, but to install, there's a special tool you'll need to keep everything at TDC.

You can get name-brand parts, which I would recommend because these aren't easy to replace.

A MAF sensor, sure. On top and two screws. If it fails, it's easy to get another in there.
A fuel pump or timing chain? Dude.

A good resource to check is YouTube. People have gone and are going through what you have.

Depends on how much money you want to spend on the truck, and how much time you want to spend wrenching on it. Remember the old golden rule "If it ain't broke, don't fix it"; you always risk creating more work than planned(stripped/broken bolts). IMO, if you need to remove a part to get access to the broken stuff and it seems worn and the price is in your ballpark, then go ahead and replace it.
