Agreed. I have a feeling that the ones that think the best logic is to not buy one if you ever expect decent mileage are the ones with some of or most of the following: 4.0, 4x4, super cab, lifted, weigh 4,000 pounds, aggressive tires that suck up an extra 2mpg, drive aggressive...

And then there's the 4cyl owners that get 25-30 MPG and wonder when they see these threads.

 

For a 4.0L V6 SOHC with the horsepower and torque of my 08 ranger, I get average 14.889 miles per gallon, and I have a heavy foot, and live in Wisconsin, every morning it is cold here and I let my truck warm up for five or 10 minutes. I bought the ranger because I run a landscaping and snow removal business, and I never complained about getting a ranger, they get much better gas mileage than all of my family's cars:
Dad: 2008 Ford Expedition EL - 5.4L Triton - 11.742 Average MPG
Mom: 2010 Ford Taurus Limited - 3.5L - 16.991 Average MPG
Brother: 2007 Ford Five Hundred Limited AWD - 3.0L Duratech (with CVT) - 14 Avg MPG
Me: 2008 Ford Ranger XLT - 4.0L V6 SOHC - 4.10 LSD - 4WD - 14.889 Avg MPG

But I used to have worse, I had a 2005 Ford E250 with the 5.4L Triton, and blown piston rings, burned 6 quarts of oil every oil change, and got about 3.787 MPG

 

Man, you have to chill out. Most people get these trucks knowing that the mileage will not be great. The truth is that gas is ****ing expensive and a lot of people are just trying to get the best mileage they can out of the vehicles they have. So in your words, "deal with it."

 

Im not saying anything, I understand bigger vehicles = more weight, which equals, more power needed to propel the vehicle forward, which means more gas consumption. If you guys would have read the first post I did, you would notice I never complained or argued about fuel consumption. I was actually asking if anyone ever tried that scam with the magnets

 

Brake early not late, no sense in racing to a red light.

 

My Girlfriends mom had a 07 Expedition 4x4 with a 5.4L and she was getting 19 MPG
I have a 04 Ranger 4x4 with a 4.0L and I can only get 16 MPG on a good day.
My Girlfriends 08 Escape 4x4 with a 2.3L gets 26 MPG.

Moral to that I guess is steal the Girlfriends car

 

Agreed, I notice a big increase when I do this and try to keep it under 2k RPMs while accelerating. Watch the lights, a lot of time you can coast up to a light and time it right so you don't have to come to a complete stop.

 

If you consider it a game/challenge it can be quite interesting. Wouldn't be much fun for the ADHD youngsters on the prowl, but for this middle-aged guy it's less likely to get me in trouble than hanging out in honkey tonks and chasing skirt.

 

This is what I meant by don't brake. Regardless of how hard you run your engine, accelerate, whatever, braking is a complete waste of gas. Best thing is to eliminate scenarios you need to brake. Don't accelerate when a light is red, but don't brake until absolutely necessary. Watch countdowns on the crosswalk if available to help calculate if maybe you need to speed up to beat the light, or decide if it's too late too make it.

In the past 3 years I have put less than 25K miles on the ranger.

High gas prices are now a fact of life. Lower paying jobs, if you have a job at all are the new norm.

Until our tree huggers, and democraps get out of the way and allow the US to produce its own oil, we will forever be tied to high gas prices, which in turn drive up the cost of living while reducing wealth.

If you dont like it, trade you vehicle for something else, try to get an even trade so you dont owe more money otherwise your not saving anything.

 

One. Is the Expedition 4WD or AWD, because I forgot to mention its 4A (AWD) on the vehicle. And the EL is about 15 inches longer...I don't know how much weight that adds. With the 6 Speed Automatic.

Three. I never knew they made the escape 4 wheel drive with the 2.3L, but that is cool

im one of the ones with a 2.3 thats like wtf lol cuz i rock 24 mixed and 18 when im beatin on it(like 80 or 90 down the highway)

 

I realized two good gas saving tips today: leave a few minutes earlier for work/school and try to take the flattest route with the least stops possible, even if it tacks on a few extra miles. Leaving just 5-10 minutes earlier can sometimes give you a different traffic pattern and save you from a bit of stop and go traffic - which saves time and gas. By taking a flatter route with less stops you don't have to accelerate to keep up with different grades and using the gas to get the vehicle moving again - which also saves gas.

 

Same, I LOL when I read "How can I get better gas mileage" threads about guys with 3.0s and 4.0s. I'm like "Yeah I get near 25 so I'm k."

 

yeah it may sound dumb, but don't stop at stop sings unless you have too, such as highly populated by cops of busy road, but if you live in the sticks it works, i now its dumb just though i'd add my input

 

LOL at the people saying dont even bother. Really? How can you blame anyone for trying to get better gas mileage. Some of us dont trash these trucks or do useless mods and go mudding in them. These are daily drivers for some of us and I dont see why it would be wrong for someone to try to get their truck running as efficiently as possible and maybe putting a couple extra bucks in their pockets.

 

After driving 350 miles with a 4.0, I'd get Quik Trip gas. Driving 350 miles with a 2.3, I get Quik trip gas...and a weeks worth of Quik Trip coffee and hot dogs.
