Getting back into a ranger.. This price seem fair?

Sold my F250 last week and looking to get back into another ranger for gas reasons. Been looking non stop for the right ranger. Found a 2001 XLT flareside 4WD. Has 4.0 and auto trans 166k miles. Looks pretty clean in the pics and they said it was just as nice up close. Its the most equipped ranger ive found yet for the price. Have them at $5000 since I have top take a small road trip to get it. Dont mind the camper shell as it would be first to go. Only other truck ive found is a 01 mazda B4000 4wd ext cab but he want budge off $5800 and the a/c doesnt work. too hot in GA not to have the a/c.

thats not a bad price
take $5k with you when/if you go to see it (just in case)
then while your there, use the miles as the main bargaining point, and then go over it with a fine toothed comb, nitpick, and basically try and squeeze them down on the price as much as your able.
Id say if you can talk them down to $4500 you would be getting a pretty fair deal on it.
just keep in mind the 4.0 starts developing mild problems around that mileage that, if not taken care of quickly, will turn into major problems :)
(another bargaining point)

what kind of problems should i be worried about whit the mileage? Your kind of making me nervous now. high mileage usually doesnt bother me as long as its been well kept. Sold a 01 f150 last summer with 230k miles and it ran flawless but the 5.4's have been proven and ive never looked into longevity of the 4.0

oh no, dont get the wrong impression, its a solid engine and should be fine if its been well maintained.
if they have good records of maintenance, then you shouldnt have to worry about anything.
if you are concerned though, do a search on the forums for 4.0l problems (or just browse the 4.0L section)

Well that one sold last night so im on the prowl once again. Seems like everyone is wanting an arm and a leg for these little trucks right now. guess due to gas prices. Also been looking for a nice tacoma but there almost twice as high as a ranger

Oh ok... from what i've seen if you're looking for 4wd, gonna be hard to find a decent one in the 5k range.

4wd inst a must but at least want a ext cab edge. been talking to another guy with a red 01 XLT 4wd ext cab with 140k miles on the 4.0. looks to be a nice truck but its 5 hours away. Not a huge fan of red but i think it would look good two toned with DSG on the bottom and flares.

some options
2003 ranger XLT 4x4 xcab

2001 3.0L supercab

02 ranger xcab

not sure how far you are from them, but should be less than 5 hrs

here is exactly what your looking for, but its in orlando, which would be quite a drive for you:
2003 4dr, 4.0L 4wd

Going to go pick up the red one tomorrow from the mautofied link above. Besides tires it sounds to be a great truck. course it is used so im sure ill find some issues with it but I have to have a truck by Sunday so running out of time.

I think your going to be highly disappointed.
if it was me, and I was going to drive 5+ hours, Id be going to look/buy the best possible deal, which that truck is not.

I truly hope your not paying what he is asking.

my ranger gets terrible gas mileage downgrading from a 250 to a ranger just doesn't seem like a big enough jump in MPG to justify the smaller truck.

Truck was a piece! Nothing like he described. Going to stop and look at a 06 2wd DSG edge since its on the way. Far as getting rid of the F250 I agree it was a stupid idea but I took a job driving my own truck and paying for my gas so at the time it sounded like a good idea. It was a super nice 97 powerstroke. Oh well not the first one I regret selling.

well guys I didnt find a ranger but instead I found a killer deal on a 99 Tacoma prerunner. Has 226k miles but she runs perfect and will do me just fine for the money.
