Stock Ranger stereos, like all other similar era Fords, suck unless you have the factory Tremor package which is pretty decent and it's all Pioneer components.
The 6 disc indash changers are crap because they jam and break, and most of the stock CD players are not MP3 compatible until about 2003 or 2004, as my 02 has a cd player but didn't play mp3s, so I put in a stock headunit from a 2007 Ranger which is mp3 compatible.
In all reality, I am an audio guy and I love great sound, but I've been driving my truck for the past year with a stock stereo in it and it's really not that bad. My last vehicle was a Cadillac Catera with an 8 speaker Bose stereo,Sony headunit, with a 400w Kenwood amp hooked up to the door speakers, and a 1500w Clarion amp on a pair of 12" Kenwood subs. It was good enough for me to take 2nd place in an SPL competition.
Because Rangers look pretty lame when they're stock, the first I would do right away is wheels and lift. Save the audio for later because there's nothing that looks more rediculous than a completely stock vehicle with a look at me sound system.

plus, I'd rather see something cool rather than hear bumpity bump bump driving down the road. Hearing other people's stereos all the time gets really annoying really fast.
There's like 3 guys on my street with systems in their ricers and at any hour of the day or night all you hear is waaaaaaaaaa waaaaaaaaahhhhhh thumpthump baaaaahhhhhhh thumpthump thumb baaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhh

well i its the speakers and the amps that give it the volume aint it? cause i know on my neon i have now since i put the system in it i have its like 1 of the louder radios at parties when its only only like 35 and it goes to 50 so maby i could just steal the speakers and the HU from my neon and work on the outside
cause i do agree i think it neeeds to me more functionallllllllll

ya their 5x7's n 6x9's btw i had bought those 2kicker 12's the box and the amp as a deal bout 5 years back and they still hit as hard as the day i bought em, gotta love kickers quality, then i bought that 3rd sub its a 12" boston acoustic and the other amp from the same place 4 1/2 years later thought it wasnt loud enough so id crank it up alil lol neighbors hate it but ohwell screwem! either way start with the outside and work your way in thats what i did, started with rims+tires, duel exhaust, fenderflares, so on, then inside, replaced all speakers with infinity references and subs, and a pioneer flip down cd player, neoprene seat covers not the cheap $20 1's either they ran me $300, waterproof stain resistant made of the same material divers use. so ya i thought it turned out nice!! gl with your truck man!!!
