Help needed ASAP

hey guys I have a 1999 ford ranger with the 3.0 and lately I’ve been having a issue where when I press on the brakes my left turn signal turns on.

(Not flashing but solid colour) and when I turn on my running lights it also turns on so the only time I have a left signal is if I don’t have lights on and I’m not on the brakes. I replaced the turn signal relay under the dash but it didnt do the job

anyone got any ideas of what could be wrong?
any help would be awesome

Welcome to the forum

Check the Trailer wiring in the back, it can get water intrusion this time of year

What you are seeing is a Ground issue most likely
So check the brake light wiring at the back especially the Ground connections to the frame, where trailer light wiring is
When you apply the brakes the 12volts goes to the brake light bulbs but the bulbs don't have a good ground any more so the 12volts is passing thru the left turn turn bulbs to its Good Ground, which causes the left turn bulb to light up.

Also, check the Main Body Ground, from the engine to the Firewall of the Cab.

Once that one goes the Cab starts having all kind of screwed up electrical problems.

Once you have this problem straightened out, think about checking all of your grounds, there are a few in the engine bay that will help with all electrical in the truck, we are talking a 20 year old truck in wet conditions.

If all else fails, check out the Multi-Function Switch inside of the steering column, they go bad and can give lighting problems.
The Multi-Function Switch controls Brake Lights, Directionals, Flashers, and High/Low Beams, maybe more I do not know the full function of this Unit.

Good Luck,

Don't hit the brakes when you turn right -:)

The wiring harness I am looking at suggest the multi-function switch.

What wiring harness ?

Why does it suggest the Multi-Function Switch ?

Since the Multi-Function Switch controls a lot fo lighting, it could be your culprit, IF you can find another one... used, you might try one before buying a new one.
OR maybe the Parts Store you buy a new M-F Switch from will allow you to return it, if it does fix the problem.

Keep posting !

All those circuits you mention go through that switch assembly. It the only logical failure point. If you’re handy with a meter you can test it, to a certain extent. I can post the diagram later if you want.

I once had a similar issue and it nearly drove me crazy. When I put on the brakes everything would turn on, parking lights tail lights the works. Turned out one of my tail light bulbs with the dual elements had the elements melted and fused together. So Just for giggles check all your bulbs and make sure they're good and working properly.
