How often do you change the air filter?
How often do you change your air filter? I actualy still have my stock one that im running (now that i took my k&n out). Its 2 years old, still looks clean, should i replace it? I hear some guys change it every oil change, is that nessessary?
|
every oil change? no way. that owuld be a waste unless you were in extremly dusty conditions.
i need to get a new one. i have no idea how many miles are on the one i have now. |
hahah...
i need to... it's been 45,000 miles... lol |

I've got a MAF adapter with a custom -bucket-built- heat shield covering a cone filter. It gets changed about as often as I can find one under $15, which is running at about once a few months or so (3-4).

when it looks dirty...
|
every other oil change is a good rule of thumb. Just look at every oil change and decide if you need a new one.

I use a fram filter and it's just starting to get dark around the edges. It's got about 8000 miles on it so I'm ready for a change. I take mine out and beat it against the bumper to "recharge" it a bit.

i should prolyl go get one today, ive been putting it off too long. actually this filter i have is older than my truck |
ok cuz mine is slightly black around the edges, but in the center it still looks brand new. I guess this filter will last a bunch more miles
|
did you know a stock replacement is only 10 bucks! i had no idea it was so cheap.
learned something new today. lol |
i got a K&N and i clean mine about every 4th or 5th oil change.......K&N says you can do it every 25,000 but that is a little much for me
|
Ford says every 30000 unless excessive dust.. ie dirt road driving(alot)
I generally change mine about once a year |
I have a K&N cold air intake on mine. I just rinsed it and recharged the other day. I had about 20K miles on it or so? Probably too early but i'm sure it won't hurt anything. -Mike-
|
Well if amsoil's correct not for another 100K... so 102K which will take me 15 years to rack up.
|
i have a k and n 77 series and i wash mine after i'm in the sand or on a dusty trail, but if i'm just staying on the street, i clean it every oil change or so. it takes just a few min, why not clean it
|
ive heard that if you bend the fliter so the fins fan out and look at a light through it, if you can see light your still good, if not its time for a change...

autozone and napa, both around 10 bucks. for the 4.0 atleast.
|
I clean my K&N every few weeks or so, I go wheelin alot though (3-4 times a week for a few hours at a time) It usally gets caked in mud, and my truck doesnt wanna move
|
I checked my stock filter the other day and found some small pellets that looked like rat crap in my air box.
But yeah, I just changed what looked to be the original filter at 28,000 miles. It was getting black along the edges. |
When you should change an air filter has nothing to do with how many miles you've driven on it. You change it when it gets so dirty and clogged up that air will not easily pass through it. How fast it gets dirty depends on your driving conditions. The more you drive on gravel and dirt roads or off-road, the faster the filter will get dirty. Some people can go 40,000 mi. or more before needing a new filter (or before needing to clean a cleanable one) and some people can go only 3,000 mi. or less. Look at the filter. Then bang both sides on a flat hard surface to get off as much dirt as you can. If you can see through the filter media when holding the filter up to the sun, and if, when you put your mouth against the filter media and gently inhale you can easily inhale air through the filter media, the filter should still be good.
