Hello y'all I just switched over from a 2000 explorer xlt with FW-4WD to a RWD 2008 ranger xlt 3.0 Ltr V6 with 30k miles this weekend. Being a first time RWD driver I was wondering what are the simplest ways to improve traction and handling in the snow and ice this winter in Chicago. I already threw some new General Tire Mud/Snow ATs on , as well as new brakes and was considering a couple 100 lbs of sand bags over the rear axle.

 

I think you answered your own question. Good tires and some secured weight over the rear axle should help a fair amount.

 

Weight weight weight. Have some on stand by for the REALLY bad days. Otherwise I run 250 lbs all winter.

 

250 lbs got it. Are sand bags the best way to achieve this?

 

I've seen sandbags, concrete bags, cinder blocks, steel plates, tool boxes, bricks, buckets full of stuff, lots of compact snow, anything with weight.

If you go with sand bags you should wrap them in plastic or just duct tape the hell outta them. The crappy bags they come in fall apart and dump sand everywhere. A few guys get used tractor tubes and fill them up. They last for years. Regular sand bags last on average one season.
