Identifying a part.

Looking for what should be here? I was driving and noticed a bit of a leak then stopped find that this hole was wide open and missing whatever when in side? There was no cover or anything else. This is a For Ranger 2002 4.0L.

More info.

The truck is a 2002 Ford Ranger 4.0L engine. This is on the back drivers side of the engine.
There was nothing bolted in place but had what ever was there come out. I ended up putting an expansion plug in it to get it home but want to know what it is and size of the actual plug that should go there.
