MPG blows. The OHV 4.0 is a decent motor but you won't be going fast anytime soon.

Go to autozone and borrow the code scanner. 4 banger as in 4 cylinder.

I don't think there was a 4.0L 4 cylinder Ranger ever produced.

It's either a 4.0L V6 4x4... or a 3.0L (or 2.3L) 4 cylinder 4x4 (that is, if Ford made a non-V6 4x4 super cab... I'm sure someone with more knowledge will chime in)

If it didn't have much get-up-and-go, it's more likely a 4 cylinder. Even my OLD 4.0L V6 has a bit of power.

Based on your comments, I suggest you take an experienced person with you to look at that truck in order to make a proper assessment rather than shooting in the dark on the internet.

you own a honda and don't know what a 4 banger is?
before you buy that truck, search. educate yourself about trucks. don't just buy it because "it's lifted and looks cool". do your homework

the gas milage isn't like your honda. it can suck at times. the motor in that truck is a good motor and hase been around for awhile. 2001 they went to a sohc 4.0 instead of that pushrod ohv.
you can't handle as well in that (lifted truck) as you could in a lower ground clearance car.

being 4wd, there is twice as many parts to break. front cv joints, front and rear driveshafts or u-joints just to touch the surface.
you already said that 3rd gear is "funny feeling" it could have a tranny that is on it's way out. that would be a red flag to me.

take bergs' advice too. bring someone to look at it.
