1999 B4000 Brake Question

I just got a 1999 B4000 to use as a weekend beeter. It is actualy very nice. It has 126,000 miles but everything was documented as far as work goes.

The problem I have is that it does not seem to stop as well as as it should. Even to the floor, the truck stops, but it just seems soft, especially since it is not hard to put it to the floor.

I just filled the fluid, the pads look about 60 to 70% of new, and the rotors are pretty good. Any ideas on what might be going on?

I would like to know too. I have the same problem. We actually discovered that my rear brake adjusters don't work as they should so I have been adjusting them by hand here and there but even then braking feels real soft.

Maybe check out your rear drums. They may be out of adjustment. Or could it be the master cylinder? When you get a chance you should make a signature with some details about the truck so we have a better idea too.

like 90% of your braking is in your front brakes. My truck hasn't had back brakes since a few months ago, but I'm off at college. So it's most likely a front problem. I honestly cannot remember much about brakes, was never really interested in them. But I bet they're adjustable, I just cannot remember how they adjust in the front. Self adjusting in the back...

Also, is it ABS? Because if so, ABS is supposed to make your stops not so "screEEEEECH!" stops and more of a controlled stop.

in all honesty, youve probably got cheap pads. change to a set of ceramic pads in the front and give the system a good bleed. i can tell you my favorite method for bleeding if anyone cares

Thanks all.

I am going to try the new pads and maybe even rotors while I am down there.

The reason I got worried was that as I was driving down a hll, I had to slam on the brakes from about 40 mph, and it felt soft. I can compare because everyday of the week I drive a 2001 Ranger for work. and compared to my work Ranger, the Mazda kinda pushed to a stop.

Also, as I came to a stop, the ABS light and the parking brake light came on. Neither have been on since I filled the fluid.
So I'll see what it feels like with new pads and rotors.

Any suggestions with the pads? Brand? Type?

Hell, actually this has nothing to do with the thread title. Can a mod change that to say brake question?

I have a suspension but I will ask that seperatly...

wow if your brake and ABS lights are coming on you may have a more serious problem. thats something one of the more in depth gurus could help wtih, N3ELZ or rwenzing might chime in on that.

as far as pads, i reccommend ceramic pads. there is a thread that is asking about pads, so you should follow that one

Well like I said, since I filled the brake fluid (it was about 1/2 low) the ABS light has not come on.

I also hear that there is a sensor in the rear that deals with the ABS system, ands that might be going bad.

Any thoughts?
