Locking gas cap in action

When I went to fill up yesterday I was trying to put my key into the gas cap and was having a hard time so I took a closer look and found a nice little gouge from something like a screw driver. Finally got it unlocked but now I sure am glad I got this locking gas cap as someone was obviously trying to get into it.

Well at least you could still get it open. I have wanted one of those but my only question is say someone does screw it up and you can't get the key in. How do you get it off?

With a torch of corse!

Drill it out I guess would be your only option. I was thinking of getting one myself but I just don't like the hassle of taking it off everytime, but I guess it would only take one time of someone stealing my gas and I would put one on...

I want to get one but I'm going to buy it from Ford. Yeah it will be overpriced but the ones from Ford have the harness.

I got hit a week ago and lost most of a full tank. This is a few weeks after they attempted to steal 2 catalytic convertors off the truck.

You can pop those locking caps off easy. Think about it if someone wants your gas they are GOING to get it.

It hasn't happened to me yet but this is seriously getting stupid. Next thing you now we're going to have to sleep in the bed of our trucks with a 12 gauge.

I made the teather work with the locking cap. On my friends car someone tried to pry off his locking cap and it did break off but it still left part of it in the filler tube so his gas wasn't stolen.

Yeah I would rather make it harder for them to steal my gas.

That was one of the first things I bought for my truck.

I've gone out to my truck a few times and the gas door was open, no damage and I still have all of my gas while others in my parking lot are pissed.

Isn't there a screen in the filler neck to prevent siphoning?

Plus, if someone wants your gas that bad, all they have to do is take a cordless drill to your tank.

why waste your money on that? if they want it they can just punch a hole in your tank and steal it that way. they wont even touch your gas cap-its more of a peace of mind to the buyer- thats what i think anyway.
Fortunately i have the luxury of keeping my truck in the garage and i work at my local police department so i dont think anyone is stupid enough to steal from the police in broad day light- but you never know i guess hehe.

Read the main post and the post I made.

If someone is going around stealing gas, when they open the gas door and can't get the cap off they are more then likely going to move on to the next car that is easy to access.

Why would they want to be bothered with breaking a cap off when they can just walk to another that has a normal gas cap.

Think about it as if you were a thief.

The police staion around here has two gas pumps for the patrol cars. In broad day light two cars pulled up and stole ~ 30 galons each. It was not noticed until the next day and the security footage was reviewed showing the act. The criminals were eventually caught.

We lost the keys to the locking cap on our bronco. Took a screwdriver an beat it into the key hole an started ripping it apart. Between that an pulling pieces out with some needle nose pliers it eventually came off. Its easy, just time consuming.

Kinda makes you wonder why someone spent time on your gas cap, are you sure you don't have any enemies or disgruntled g/f?

to get them off. a slide hammer with the screw attachment. pull up the lock pops out. and unscrew.. "sometimes" you need to take a small screwdriver to flip a little tang inside to unscrew it..

really easy...

is it really necessary to post on the internet on "how-to defeat locking gas caps". Maybe "how to break into and steal a ranger" should be the next thread?

Come 'on people, we all know there are ways..but is it necessary to go into detail?

I've considered one, all it takes is some dumbass punk to randomly dump something in your tank to really ruin a lot of components. I will get one when i move into an apartment and have to park as anyone else.

the guy asked if its tampered with and cant get it to unlock how? its no different then driving a screw driver into the lock of it also...

had to it on my buddy's car he bought it used the they didnt give him a key to the cap..

i dont find braking a locking gas cap the same as braking in and stealing a whole vehicle..

Question:

1. Is it always locked or can you have it unlocked?

2. Can I buy a cheap one that will attach to the truck like the stock one? I will not buy it from Ford.
