Lost my spare tire key, how can i remove the lock?

A long time ago, I lost my spare tire key and would like to get the lock off. I know there is a number stamped into the outside area of the lock that I'm assuming is a reference number to cut a new key to fit that lock. Are there any alternatives besides going to the dealer and getting raped for the cost of a new key? I was thinking of going to a locksmith and seeing if he could pick it for me and just leaving the lock off of the truck once it was removed. Has anyone else ran into this mini-dillema?

Just borrow someone elses key. When we were in Centralia Tom(Tbarcya) destroyed a rim and didn't have the key to his lock. I was able to remove the lock on his truck with my key. The numbers on his lock did not match mine either. Maybe you can get lucky like Tom.

i would roll up to a tire shop, they have special sockets that, if they can get it around, it will pull it off. they would probably do it for free.

i used to get my sockets, and get one that was kinda like it, and hammer it on. The key will go before the socket, if you have quality sockets.

Yeah if you take a Craftsman 12 point socket close to the same size hammer it on tight and take an impact to it and it'll come right off. Then you'll have to punch through the hole in the socket to get it out. It will work. Otherwise call McGard or whoever it is that makes the key and they'll send you a new one for like 15 bucks. The only place you can get a key is from the manufacturer.

Yea, hammer it on, take it off, put the socket in something that will hold it, stick a screwdriver in through it, and hammer off the lock.. good to go.

i used a flat head and a hammer and slowly worked it off.
removing the tail gate gives a lot of room to work.
basically just brake the lock off...they rust out anyway.

Sorry I wasnt more specific, but yes, I am referring to the lock underneath the tailgate. I was thinking of removing the tail gate, inserting a beefy flathead into the lock and trying to hammer it out.

My otherwise very well equipped '03 FX4 did not have this lock.. yet my stripped '99 XL did. I think we came to the conclusion that they stopped including these locks sometime around MY 2001. Although I'm sure they're available as an accessory from Ford.. for a price. Although if you're spending money, I'd probably go w/ a chain or cable and a heavy duty padlock instead. The plastic slip in lock never rubbed me as overly secure.
