So for the last week i been hunting the ever elusive evap leak in my ranger right! I go threw every freaking vac line every freaking sensor and finally i said screw it and cut the evap line going to the fuel tank and got my self a cigar and blew into that ****** with all my lung capacity!!!! Then i seen it!! A poof of smoke from the top of the fuel tank!! My first reaction was Haha you ****** i found you! So i start feeling around on top of the tank looking for the evap line in! But i can't find it! I thought well thats weird so i poke around a little more then i feel it!!!! A hole the size of a quarter where the evap line goes into the t
ank! So with much grief over code po1455 i think i found the issue =\ So ordered the new tank and straps total cost $140.00 not bad for a new tank and straps will keep you guy's updated after install wish me luck =)

Well at least you found the problem! I hate evap and vac leaks. Just an fyi, you can pick up one of those old fashion smoke pumps people use for bee hives for about 10 dollars. Just modify the spout a bit to take a hose fitting and you got yourself a functional smoke machine to find leaks. Waaaaaay easier than the ole cigar trick! Well, unless you really love cigars.
Hey Apex yea i tryed looking for a cheap smoke machine but my 96 only has 1 Vac Line going to the charcoal canister the issue was at the tank the fuel vent valve line got rotted and fell off the top of the tank. And they are very brittle to touch break very easily. I know i broke mine had to replace it. But the tank is back in and all i need todo today is reinstall the filler neck which is not easy with bed on! So i keep ya upto date ty Titan.
Great looking Ranger !
This is just my idea, since you have a rusted tank on the top, I wonder what also is rusted in that area.
I know you will see once the tank is out but... for me it was easier to just remove the bed, four bolts for the bed, maybe six, four small bolts on the Filler Tube, and some electrics.
Now you have clear access to the tank, that area around the tank and all connections, which it wouldn't hurt to check out.
You actually get a few things done you didn't plan on so it's a win/win !
While the bed os off, you might check out the frame for rust, clean things up and reaping as needed.
Sorry, not trying to change your mind or your methods, just thinking in the long run do it all NOW and save time later... and it is easier to get the tank out and in with the bed off !
Yea i was going to remove the bed but after the bolts were sprayed for 3 days i still snapped the first 1 and said screw it i go under instead!
The Good news is that it was not the tank after all but just dirt piled up on the tank and the fuel vent valve hose was dried up and cracked and fell off the vent valve causing my tank to not hold pressure and give the code for the purge valve solenoid high output!
Being this truck only has 1 vac line coming from the upper intake i thought easy evap leak to detect but i found nothing up front leaking untill i did a smoke test on the evap line going back to the tank. Where i seen smoke coming from the inner frame by the tank!
I thought wow that's weird! So i lowered the tank to see the vent valve and the hose was shot on it so i replaced the 2 inch hose going from the vent valve on the top of the tank to the vac line leading up which ford give's you no room for error here and a very tight squeeze on top of the cross member to find the vent valve line to reconnect! Then the rain came i had to stop for the day but the tank is up and vent line reattached all i need to do is reattach the filler neck to the tank clamp it down and then finish tightening the straps up.
Will keep the updates coming as they happen Thx Titan..

OK you got started on the Bed removal... do you plan to keep going, replace all of the bolts AND nuts, and use anti-seize on the threads when going back to gather, a must-do, the copper stuff !
I did mine when I took it apart to put on the Steppie Bed, got a chance to clean everything up, stops moisture buildup and help the rust stop. Also got a chance to replace the Filler Tube, it will start leaking before you know it.
IF and while you are under there, check everything, connectors, fuel fittings, lines, hoses, do the dirty deed and make sure everything is up to speed.
