O/D Off Light Flashing

I have a 2000 Ranger 3.0 Auto and the O/D Off light starts flashing after it warms up. Then it shifts out of 1st late. I checked the fluid and it was reddish and doesn't smell burnt. The fluid level is reading high, which is strange because I never added fluid. In fact a few months ago I changed the radiator and did not add any trans fluid. any help is appreciated.

The O/D Off light is like a Check Engine Light, except for the transmission. You're throwing a code related to the transmission. Won't know which one for sure until you hook a code scanner up to it.

OK. My scanner doesn't read transmission codes. I'll have to find somewhere to have it read tomorrow.

I've been dealing with pretty much the same issue with my 02 2WD 3.0. So far I've done a full transmission fluid flush and fill. Work was done at a very reputable local dealer and ran about $300.00. This also included replacing a leaky transmission pan gasket. Service manager said that the code is probably related to a sticky valve inside the tranny and that any other "fix" would entail much more expensive transmission disassembly. Since the problem is not showing itself in the form of poor shifting or any tranny related noises I decided to try this flush and see what happens. I've never been a fan of dealership repair due to potential high costs but this place is different than any other because the head service manager is a friend. Work was done about a month ago and the flashing O/D light should have come back on by now and it hasn't. I'm crossing my fingers in hopes that this takes care of further problems. I'll be monitoring your thread and wish you luck...please post what you find out.
addendum: there are lots of posts on this site as well as on ExplorerForums.com about this kind of problem.

Dropped the tranny pan to check solenoid B.

All 4 shift solenoids: 24 ohms...within limits
TCC Solenoid: 9.9 ohms...within limits
EPC Solenoid: 4.4 ohms...within limits.

However I did notice that the EPC Solenoid wasn't as tight as the other solenoids. I was able to twist EPC solenoid to the left and right and slightly push in and out. The other 5 solenoids were all tight , no play at all. Is this normal for the EPC solenoid to have a little play while mounted in the valve body?

Update O/D Off Light Flashing

OK, I finally got a chance to work on this. I changed the valve body, trans filter, and the low/reverse servo (because it had to be removed to change valve body). Added new fluid and it seems to be shifting fine. O/D off light has not come on. I don't know for sure which part fixed it, but if you have to change the valve body, you might as well change the trans filter, the low/reverse servo and add new fluid. Hope this will help someone.

An update from 03/15: My OD light has not come on since the transmission "cleaning" that I had done but the problem has not totally been solved. At this point the transmission shows a problem by having difficulty downshifting from 4th to 3rd gear. The OD light does not come on ever and the downshifting only shows a problem if the truck is under hard acceleration such as when passing on a hill at highway speeds. Then the problem seems to be that it starts downshifting but doesn't fully get to third gear. Instead it bucks and lugs down and will only stop if I let off on the acceleration. Other than this the truck runs beautifully. So I know that I am living on borrowed time with my transmission and am saving for the day when I have to deal with this. Part of me says to abandon the truck but I really like the thing because it fits my needs perfectly and is otherwise in very good shape. Any other used vehicle that I buy will have a list of unknown problems to work through as time goes by. So my problem will be choosing between a transmission rebuild or a replacement. What I'll probably do is sell my Harley (since my arthritic hip is making riding the bike an exercise in pain) so that I can afford to fix my truck without touching savings. My bobber won't pull my jon boat and my Ranger will and I do love getting out on the river so....with problems like these I actually have no problems

A power flush of the tranny seemed to have fully taken care of the problem I was having. This was done at the Ford dealership and cost atound $300.00 with no guarantee of success. I assume that the tranny was plugged with residue causing internal valves to work correctly. Wish I could tell you morr. I feel luckly but I don't really trust the "fix".
